Nay: "etc. etc." If you have to say "etc.", which you rarely should, only say it once.
Yay: recognition. I've always loved this word because I've always seen it as re-cognition, which of course it is. Cognition, Re-Cognition, self-consciousness, Hegel and his Master-Slave dialectic... the mind wonders. The mind wonders why it wonders. The mind wonders why it wonders why it wonders... etc. |

... and then there's Hires brand root beer. Which I persist in reading as hi-res root beer and wondering what the resolution is.......

Nay: "spend", used as a noun in business speak. "When you look at your total spend on blah-blah vs. our blippity-blap, you can realize a R.O.I in 3 months."
Yay: horsesh!t. One of my grandpa's words. |

da : miscellaneous. i love everything about this word, from its sonority to its precisely vague meaning.
nyet : trendy. how canything* hype ever be referred to with such a clunky word ? and more importantly, who cares ? bonus oui : squirm. yet another example of onomatopeic self-descriptive perfection. *completely inadvertent minimalist "minimal" (seriously : technically it's a typo) which i have decided to leave uncorrected, for taylor's amusement. |

hm, well this comment no longer has any reason for being, since in the time it took me to click "quote" apparently you've changed your yay. before your edit it was bifurcate, and i was just going to tell you that i can never see the word "bifurcate" without thinking of the story the Garden of Forking Paths by Jorge Luis Borges. in fact i think i'll go copy out one of the (many) passages i wrote down in my notebook the first time i read it, in the scribbling thread.
just forget you read this. |

You caught me mid thought... I decided I didn't want to explain why I liked "bifurcate".

Jay: stromatolite (C'mon, what's not to love? Life on Earth? Age? Precambrian (another luscious word), lovely dome-headed "rocks" gathering in small crowds across a blue bay)
Nay: globalisation (the kind of word that looks much more impressive than its simple meaning, and generally makes the user feel much smarter than they actually are) Cheers, Marc |

oui : polymorphic. or almost any word using "morph". including morphée / morpheus, which means something completely different (and now, for...).
non : brustwarze (except on a purely humorous level). it really doesn't seem to celebrate the female body nearly enough for my taste. perhaps we should suggest some alternatives. i suspect there are at least 2 or 3 forum members who would be eminently qualified for this task. |

ja : travesty, when used correctly
nein : travesty, when used incorrectly to mean "tragedy". it's not the same thing at all. |

uh-HUH: toothsome - because no one ever uses it and they should. I know it means "pleasant, attractive", but to me it's always meant "looks good enough to eat".
UH-uh: similarly - because it's hard to say and awkward. |

Yep: Enthralled. To be held spellbound; enslaved. I like the feel of the word.
Nope: Like. At least, the way my daughter uses it ("Like, every other word is, like, like.") |

hm, "enthralled", lovely.
i will try to add "toothsome" to my vocabularly (oh, and i looked it up in the dictionary : i bet i know which is your favorite use of the three... ![]() si : murmur. it's like an onomatopeia which got drafted into the official language. no "nein" for the moment. isn't it nice when the positive outweighs the negative ? |
