well don't get discouraged, i think a device like that will be appearing really soon (like, within the next few years). we're already getting quite close.

I think within the next few year induction charging is going to be all the rage. So, as long as the device batter can last the day 16 hours or so... when I put it down it will charge via induction.... that would be fine.
This would make it easier to provide more wireless and other type features which suck power. BOb |

Sony 505 and 700. And one of the earlier iRex models.
If the Sony's were faster and did not have the screen flicker and had a larger screen then *maybe* they are worth the price. Currently, I think they are just fleecing the early adopters. Again this is completely IMHO. |

the $900 price point...
I was thinking : what if there was an iPhone like device (or maybe even an iPhone) with an 8" screen and a 300 dpi display? This would be a great second computer (for me.)
Now, what if it had a low-power display. maybe some kind of OLED. maybe some super duper evolution of e-ink. Then it would also be a great book reader (for me.) Hmmmm.... how much would I pay for this? $900. |

One of the things that needs fixing in every eink device is the software. There are fundamental problems with every devices that can be fixed and should be fixed. What we need is proper kerning and hyphenation. None of them have this yet. Why don't they? It's not like it's impossible to do.

I'll add one more thing my ideal reader would have: a case with a strap so I could carry it around easily - and the case would have a window in it (safely covered in plastic) so I could read right thru the case, without having to take it out and expose it to the elements.
Readin' in the rain, just readin' in the rain ... ;-) |

Has a 6" screen really been enough for everyone using them?
This is one of my biggest gripes with the marketing of readers - they claim paperback size screens.... But in reality they are only about 60% of the size of a paperback. (sorry for the complaining) |

i added those two choices, and i added 3 votes for waterproof (you, since it seems like you like that idea, me, the person who suggested it) and 2 for the strap (me, the person who suggested it).

I wish I could spec my reader, pay the money to a contract manufacturer, And build the reader I want. And then I wish I could install Ubuntu on it. And the PDF reading app of my choice. And then I wish I could buy my books, comics and periodicals with no DRM. So I can transfer versions with low res images to my reader while keeping versions with high resolution images on my desktop. <sigh> |

You folks know that M-Edge makes the Leisure Jacket for the Sony and the Kindle which has teh plastic see-through cover. It's water resistant (for the Sony, not so much for the Kindle because of the cursor wheel). I wrote M-Edge several months ago requesting a cover with a shoulder strap. They said they would consider it but it seems they aren't going to do it.

I'd like my reader to be a sheet of plastic so I could take it with me in the bathtub, drop it to the floor without harm, have a bus roll on it, (or some wacky lab technician hit it with a shoe) use only solar energy, be wireless, color, rollable... and have a few hundred units for the same price as today's readers.
