And what about Hugo? He needs to be saved from himself, and you know, despite your tough love stance with Hugo, that saving him is YOUR job. All his rough talk about how Lefty is holding him back, weighing him down, is just that: talk. In his own way, he needs Lefty as much as Lefty needs him. What's going to happen when Bernice kicks him to the curb, as is inevitable? Are you really going to leave him out there, an unmatched sock, slumped on a sidewalk in Saint-Denis?
Poor Lefty. He's always been the sensitive one, worrying that those frayed and thinning threads are a sign he's getting past his prime wearability age. Or that the way his ribbing sags a little means he needs to find a better washing detergent. Did you know he's even considered seeing a reconstructive specialist to discuss whether he's a candidate for having the thin spot darned? As for Hugo, I think he needs to be hung out to dry for a couple of days.

Hugo and Lefty are very much the George and Lennie of the sock drawer.

Hugo has finally slithered back home, quietly, under the door, much the worse for wear. He finds Lefty on the window sill, quietly watching the shums at their antics. We suspect he's trying to count them, but as we know, socks, even smart wool socks, can only count to five, and even that is dubious in Lefty's case.

Hugo, even through a killer hang-over, can still function well enough to contemplate Lefty, noticing all the small details of posture that he knows so well. He'd like nothing better than to collapse into a pile of Zelda's scarves and sleep away the last few days, but instead he sidles up to Lefty, who doesn't say a word. No words are needed. Despite everything, they are a pair, after all.

Something must be done, however, about the smell of bourbon, Gauloises, cat urine, pathos, and fabric softener.

hugo always was a troublemaker. even in his youth, he was always the provocateur, dragging lefty along to dubious bars in bad neighborhoods, hanging with a tough punk rock crowd -- that hole that "mysteriously appeared" in his ribbing one day, and that he closed up with a safety pin -- lefty would have been perfectly happy to go to a jazz club and drink too much coffee but that wasn't extreme enough for hugo.

but though hugo's antics sometimes make lefty suffer, they seem truly complementary somehow ; i suspect that without lefty's calming influence, hugo would probably spiral farther and farther out of control until he came completely unravelled, and that deep down, without hugo, lefty's life would be a little *too* routine... boring, even.

sure, they have their moments of crisis when it seems they'll never again manage to roll up together in that little ball they used to make, but when hugo drags himself home in a lamentable state and lefty, clean and still smelling fresh from the last time, goes through the wash along with him just to keep him company, so they'll keep fading together at the same rate and never be mismatched, you know that neither one of them will ever get lost in the spin cycle.

Maybe this should go into vent and rant ... but ... my day so far ...

cats hid car keys
under a pile of poop
didn't find them until after 10
plane left at 1140
it takes an hour and a half to get to the airport you all do th math
ticket was nonrefundable
no other flights on that airline
$500 out the door
New ticket with United $1200
Killing the cats when I get home .... Priceless

Meanwhile, I'm at the airport for for more hours until this flight leaves

Oh, poor Ricky! The cats must have been feeling vindictive after you hid the tools.

Z-chan, I particularly like that last bit about Lefty going through the laundry with Hugo.

Now I'm imagining interactions between Lefty and Hugo and your wristies (was it "mitteins"?) A double-date, perhaps....

The cats just plain hate it when I travel. They have done this sort of thing before, and I suppose they will go on doing it, and because I love them, I will try to laugh about it.

However, they also hid one of my chargers, so I had to special order one to be sent to me at the hotel in Monterey. They "said" it should be there by tomorrow and that I "should" be able to make it through the day on that device with the battery charge I have. I hope so ....

But, hey .... like I said before, I am sort of a magnet for things going wrong. It simply is the story of my life. However (there is always a however ... don'tcha know) I pulled out the new laptop and paid for an airport connection, so at least I can browse the web or watch a movie, or read or something while I wait.

Sigh ....

I was able to get an airline to transfer me to another flight once when I got there a bit too late... I don't think they even charged me the $70 fee. Maybe they were oversold on that flight anyway. But that was a few years ago. They're probably a lot less forgiving these days, when they don't even pretend to provide meals on flights.

At least you have an internet connection... so you have all of us to help cheer you up!

No ... it couldn't be that easy. American Airlines not only wouldn't let me on the plane (which was still at the gate, but the door had been closed), but the only way they would reschedule me was if I left the day after tomorrow .... and naturally, by then the conference would be mostly over.

So, I forfeited my $500 AA ticket and had to buy a new ticket through United. That was the only airlines that had a flight to Monterey that would actually get me there today.

So, instead of getting there in the afternoon, I now will get in about midnight. However, at least I will be there. What with the cost of the new tickets and all the additional electronics I had to have overnighted to me, I would say that this little kitty escapade has set me back about $800 .... ($1300 less the $500 I would have had to pay for the original ticket anyway).

Erk.

So you didn't have to pay for the AA ticket? That's something, anyway. I thought you'd gotten hit with that cost, in addition to the new ticket + electronics.

Well, yes, I had to pay for the AA ticket .... so wait. OK .... let me back up, I am so distracted I don't even know what I'm talking about.

The AA ticket was $500 .... that was non refundable
The UA ticket was $1200 .... that is also non refundable, but at least I'm on time for this flight
The replacement charger (with expedited shipping and blah, blah) was about $100.

So, the total damage is about $1800 .... so .... right right ..... it's not $800 I'm out ... it's $1300.

I am so having a very long talk with those cats when I get home. They are grounded, and I'm taking away their phone and internet privledges. (And, I cannot spell that damned word .... priveledges? privleges? Oh, who the hell cares).

I used to have all the books. I wonder if you can get them in ebook form? We had a cat called "Horse" once, though it was another cat we had called "Misty" (a Russian [Mafia] Blue) that was the epitomy of the Footrot Flats feline.

Cheers,
Marc

Last weekend I shut down the pool fer winter and started rooting out dead plants from the garden. Ash trees have started to turn red. Yesterday there was ice on top of the truck so after work I went out to buy a pellet stove. So now I'll go back to the installation manual. I guess that will make it a busy weekend again.

Cheers everyone!
