Trying to render images for page 12 of the manga. I have an idea to make future outdoor scenes more quickly, involving separate "layer" files with an overlapping "key" object, but it's too late to try that with this page.

Currently watching The Da Vinci Code. I'm not rightly sure why. It's been on an hour (with commercials), and has been quite shitty thus far, but at least it makes me want to watch Amélie again.

Cheers,
Marc

An hour into it? .... Hmmm... Sorry friend, but you already saw the best part. Why are you watching it, did you want to get a sick tummy to go along with the migraine?

Problem with the internet is at cable company end. Can't post using mobile version of MR without quoting someone.

I've just come back from a day spent in Hay-on-Wye (a town famous for having dozens of second-hand book shops). To my amazement, I saw my first Iliad. A person in the cafe where we had lunch had one. I was feeling a bit shy, so didn't disturb him. But I had a very good look.

I can remember being very unhappy the first time I heard of Hay-on-Wye. My discontent stemmed from the fact that I was on a plane flying home from a trip that included Wales. My travel agenda had been so tight that I wouldn't have been able to detour, but still, the thought of being so close to so many books made me pout for a while.

Pick up any good books?

I read the book a while back, and, like most books-into-movies, I knew one day I'd have to watch it to get it out of my system altogether, like an emetic.

Also, Audrey Tautou and Jean Reno. I'd turn straight for Audrey and I'd turn back for Jean.

Cheers,
Marc

Definitely Jean, though it's likely the point still stands.

A couple of novels and a life of Father Ignatius (Joseph Lester Lyne: a local religious weirdo of the late 19th century).

I almost bought a Voltaire collection which had some short pieces that I hadn't read before. But then I thought that I could possibly find them online. It turns out that I can't: the translation dates from 1929, but the translator didn't die until 1971. So either I will buy the p-book or perhaps have a go at translating them myself.

But my websearch has thrown up a few more short pieces that are in the public domain. So I've put them on my to-convert list.

I'm downloading a bunch of system updates, which I can only do between the hours of 12 and 3 am PST because these are the only hours in which my daily bandwidth isn't capped.

Deuced hard work that, avoiding work. Sneaky thing -- it keeps catching you unawares and jumping out at you when you're not looking. Good luck.
