I was poking around recently, in case I need to move soon, so at least I DO know where they are! |

Planning route for tomorrow. I have the funeral of an old friend, and there are several viable routes to travel there, but intense roadworks on some of them!

Trip was a doddle. I took a circuitous route, maybe three miles longer than the direct one, but no roadworks to speak of (Although there often seems to be a few blokes and a bunch of cones generally doing not much!)
Wonderful funeral, as much as these things can be; smoothly run, eulogy by a friend rather than a hired 'celebrant' and we were all there for our friend, and not the artificial ceremony of it all. |

Last week I was able to finally book my vaccination appointments. I'm getting my first shot tomorrow. I can remember whenever I had to get vaccinated when I was a child my mother would take, afterwards we would go out and have a drink or ice cream somewhere and I was allowed to pick out a present at the toy store.
To keep this tradition partially alive, I can't go out for a drink since I have to work after getting vaccinated, I decided to treat myself to a new backpack. I got my current Fjallraven Kanken just over six years ago, and it has been my go-to bag. It's starting to look a bit sad and the brown green colour isn't my style anymore. So I just ordered the more fancy Kanken No. 2 (with leather handles) in deep garnet. My sister's birthday was allowed to book their appointments from yesterday. My sister couldn't get through to the website, so she called for an appointment. She was really lucky, she lives around the corner from the big vaccination site and they had an opening in 10 minutes after she called. So she got her Moderna yesterday. I'm getting either Pfizer or Moderna. In five weeks I'm getting the second dose. |

It's Sunday morning and I was woken up early by the two jays that have taken up residence somewhere nearby. They start cawing (?) around 6am at the moment and waking up everyone living on this block with a bedroom at the back of their house/apartment.
I've just treated myself to a couple of books and entered them into Calibre, cleaned up the metadata of a couple of other books, transferred some books to my Kindle and before continuing with my current read I will need to put a bunch of book in the right collections, since it's become a bit of a mess on the front page. This afternoon I have to clean, normally I do this on Monday morning, but tomorrow it's a lot warmer than today, so it seemed like a good idea to do the cleaning a day early. |

Contemplating what a hot day it is promising to be! Thinking of all the small gardening jobs that need doing, but won't get done because it is way too hot!

Let's see if this upload works. If not, I'm asking over on the Tech Vent thread!
Ahh - I tested with a smaller upload, and that worked. (I was getting a blank screen after I hit the upload button) So I've divided the pics into three, instead of one. Bonus, they now look bigger, too! |

A popular item at SF cons is Filking. Folks play and sing till all hours, generally performing material written by them with an SF/F theme. Some of them are very good indeed. A friend of mine is a Filker who tends to run that part of an SF con. The filkers have been doing this for a while, and can do good solo performances. What they can't do is play together. Synchronizing the different performers into a seamless whole isn't possible. (Technically, the issue isn't latency, it's jitter.) There's at least one software package that tries to address the issue, but it requires a high bandwidth broadband link for all parties, and is very fussy about the hardware the individual performers have and its setup. This is very much a work in progress. OTOH, rock musician Peter Frampton has videos up on YouTube of performances with his band, and they are all playing from home. My impression is their contributions get sent to a server where a mixing engineer can combine the streams and sync everything, and that is what gets sent to YouTube. Not quite real time, but effective. Something lake that may have been in the process for that choral work you mentioned. ______ Dennis |
