What I'm doing right now... waiting for the torte the Muffin Man is making to finish baking and cooling. Then we will enjoy it with a fresh pot of Keemun burgundy (the color, not the wine) tea. I wish I could share with all of you! Earlier today I was given DVDs for several Doctor Who episodes (including "The Beginning" with the first Hartwell episodes!) and a gift certificate to Amazon (which will probably be used to buy textbooks....) And I also now have a "multi-function computer" for my bicycle, which means (at this time of year) a way to tell how much I'm using the bike on its trainer in my office to get exercise. |

If anyone is interested in the bike generator plans, I can post a link.... Ah-- just checked, and the hand-pump people also have a motor that can be attached, and that would run off a bicycle-powered generator pretty easily. http://www.simplepump.com/motorized_pumps.html http://www.econvergence.net/electro.htm The generator produces about 120-200 watts, and the Simplepump needs 120 watts. If I could afford to add a solar panel or two to supplement, that would be especially good. (Naturally, we're more or less broke right now. Need to find some project to raise some money.)

If you get a chance, do a picture search for Airedale puppies - they look more like badly made toy (as in stuffed, not miniature) dogs than cute puppies!

Here's a question for everyone, and I ask this most sincerely. I was just reading this whole Price Harry flap about his use of the word "Paki" to describe someone Pakistani .... I guess it's a bad word. Now, I now I've heard people all over describe people from Afghanistan as "Afghani" rather than saying Afganistani. Is that a bad word as well?? I simply can not keep up with all the things you are not supposed to call other people. I'm thinking about just calling everyone "James" and leaving it at that. Or maybe Harold. Oh, and I don't know how many of you are Eddie Izzard fans, but I just saw a show of his and I nearly peed my pants it was so funny. Especially the bit about Daisy the cow, who decides to purchase anthrax by mail to commit suicide. She was going to shoot herself, but since she has no opposable thumbs .....

It's usually applied by racist types to anyone from the Indian sub-continent irregardless of whether they are from Pakistan or India, frequently with "filthy", "dirty" or worse appended in front of it. As England has a large amount of Indian and Pakistani corner shop owners, it frequently got applied to them. I can't comment on Prince Harry's use of it as a) I don't know the chap and b) this is the first I've heard of it.

Part of the problem is the use of the term by the likes of the BNP and the expectation that someone in his position would be above that sort of slur. That and the UK media loves to have a story. Quote:

"Paki" has been rude slang in the UK for at least 30 years (I read it in a book published that long ago). Not sure about Afghani, but since I think the derogatory connotation has to do with the context the term has been used in previously, rather than the abbreviation itself, I would guess there's no particular connotation attached to it. And I suspect that part of the reason Prince Harry is getting no slack on this is because it's not his first display of cultural insensitivity. (Isn't he the one who wore an SS uniform to a costume party?) |

Perish the thought. As nice as the three breeds of Schnauzer are, mine're sweet, lovable, cuddly, independent, Foolish, crazy-as-a-shithouse-rat Airedale Terriers. You think correct. Did you know Dawn French owns an Airedale (even mentioned it on Parky once)? No? Well, now you do, and you can amaze people with your knowledge at your next dinner party! Quote:

It would have to be a dinner party that I'm invited to though, as our dining table currently houses two bookshelves...
