I download from Amazon via the Kindle for PC program. Once downloaded I import into Calibre.

ok I downloaded the Kindle for Mac app. Purchased a book from Amazon and it appears in my library. I click on it and it has the blue line around it so I know it is selected, but when I go to the File menu the Download item is greyed out.
What now? |

I tried that option as well and it says "You have selected content that is not compatible with any of your registered devices. Please remove incompatible content from selection for eligible devices to appear."

Open Kindle for Mac.
Click on a book from the Archived tab. It will download into Kindle for Mac. You book is now present in "/home/<username>/Documents/My Kindle Content/". You cannot "Download & transfer via USB" except to a hardware Kindle device (E-Ink or Kindle Fire). |

Once the book is downloaded from Amazon to my PC with Kindle for PC I close the Kindle for PC and open Calibre. Right click on the "Add Books" icon (upper left), then navigate to the Kindle for PC library -- in my case (Windows 7) it's My Documents/My Kindle Content. The book names don't make sense, but you can order them by the "Date Modified" field to get the most recent download to the top of the list. Double click it, and it should be imported into Calibre (and cleaned by Alf).
Good reading! |

Oh, sorry, I wasn't thinking about that. I bought a 1st Generation Kindle reconditioned and cheap way back when so I could download books from the website. I've never actually used the Kindle, so I forget that I had to have it before the option opened up for me. I have a Paperwhite now that I use, but I still tend to download & transfer for that "1st Kindle".

Start downloading for the new Kindle -- it'll give you AZW3 instead of MOBI, which is a better source for conversion in addition to supporting cover updates and other miscellaneous small improvements.

Man what a cluster. I think I have it figured out after a bunch of Googling and trial and error. Got one book loaded anyway.
Thanks. |

Since my main reader is a Kobo, most of my new books are readily available. Google books can be easily sideloaded, and only Amazon books require a little more work. I run everything through Alf's tools anyway for backup. But this makes it easier when I just want to read something right away. |

Nook study stopped working for me. A little over a month ago I started getting a "internal error: failed to retrieve adobe account". Asking around it has been mentioned that if you have a adobe account it should use the same email address. It does so I don't know what the problem is. And why it worked before but now it does not when I did not make any changes here. I suspect B&N did something.
Thankfully NookforPC still works to download the books. But if that fails, I guess I will have to start using my rooted Nook tablet to backup the books. I am not buying much from B&N these days due to all the problems, although I do still get a magazine or two from them. |

I just confirmed that Nook for PC, Nookstudy, and the Windows Store Nook app all still work for me on Windows 8.1. Nookstudy took forever to open, but I was still logged in when my library finally loaded. Books that I had previously downloaded with Nook for PC appeared as local and could be opened from within Nookstudy.

I just got a new computer with Windows 10 on it. It had been about 4 years since I had to set up all my ebook stuff. However, I loaded ADE 2.0, Calibre, Alf tools, Kindle for PC and even Nook for PC. It all works. I am very happy. I thought sure that I would have trouble getting everything working.
