![]() It may be pessimistic of me, but it looks like there's only problems when you update the payment method. My current card expires 2017-ish. I'm wondering at this point if B&N (or at least the B&N e-bookstore) will still be around. |

Alf's FAQ has links for Nook Study for Mac and Windows:
Mac: https://customer-care.s3.amazonaws.c...OK%20Study.dmg Windows: https://customer-care.s3.amazonaws.c...tudy_Setup.exe Alf's FAQ: https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/...removal-tools/ (Is it okay to post a link to Alf? I think so, but not 100% sure. If not, my apologies, please delete.) IIRC, someone figured out these are the direct download links from BN's web site before BN removed them. But the links themselves still work. Ironic that BN uses Amazon's servers to host their stuff ![]() |

I used to buy most of my ebooks from BN. Then they locked up their DRM and it was bye-bye BN, hello Amazon. I still make an epub version of every book I buy, even though I now have a Kindle. It's been easier than I expected thanks to KindleUnpack. |

Yes, are allowed to link to Alf's blog. The forum guidelines were revised last November to allow it. In fact, it was first mentioned in this very thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...06#post2974206

Makes sense, though.
They are very good, very efficient, and very cheap. Lots of their competitors use them. Netflix, for one. It's good business sense. Only fanboys actually boycott a good deal. Everybody else just pretends but they never put their money where their mouth is. Even clueless Amazon haters still buy or sell via Amazon. And not just authors, but publishers like Melville house. Nothing like trashing the place that helps you make a living. ![]() |

An update to Alf's tools has just been posted with more support for B&N encryption key retrieval now that they've changed from the key being based on your name and CC#. (Although since I haven't bought anything from B&N for ages, it's of academic interest only to me.)

The primary difference between using KindleUnpack vs. calibre conversion is that calibre will flatten the CSS. Oh, and also for performing scientifically-minded analysis of the format.
If you don't know what that means, it is a sign that you shouldn't care. I personally would not bother mentioning KindleUnpack to anyone who isn't exploring mobipocket internals, but some people have a bug about the "impurity" of converting. ![]() (odamizu, I am unaware of you holding those kinds of opinions ![]() |

If you want an EPUB so you can load it into a 3rd-party EPUB reading app, both Calibre and KindleUnpack work fine. I prefer KindleUnpack because if the publisher used an EPUB to create an AZW3, then KindleUnpack will produce an EPUB that's very close to the publisher's original file. This pleases me. If you convert it through Calibre, you get some extra Calibre code that I don't particularly care for. But as eschwartz notes, if you don't care about the internal code, it doesn't really matter ![]() Last edited by odamizu; 07-14-2015 at 02:28 PM. |

Well, sure thing then. So long as you don't get into snits I won't mind your bug.

Thankfully since I religiously strip the DRM and dump into Calibre, I can jump ship to Amazon without too much trouble. I really prefer epub (I have even spent a certain amount of time fixing errors and editing epubs) but I don't see there's much of a choice left in the U.S. Kobo got ruled out since they started pushing to their kepub, instead. To their credit, Kobo did manage to fix their KEPUB-only issues. I wouldn't conclude they were trying to push KEPUB. It seems very likely they simply had big bugs in their publishing workflow when it came to EPUB3, and they weren't very quick in fixing them.
We had a lengthy thread about it... somewhere... Personally I don't care. I like Amazon. But if you want EPUB, feel free to go Kobo. |
