Doesn't impact me at all. I gave up on B&N the day they took away the download link. Backed my stuff up and I won't return. Won't even go into B&M store. They've lost a customer.

From B&N's help page:
On Tuesday, June 30, we updated our BN.com ecommerce website with new features. The NOOK for Web "Read Instantly" function was not updated as part of this rollout. Our technology team is currently working on including the NOOK for Web "Read Instantly" functionality and we hope to have it available in the near future. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your continued support of NOOK. My take, one or more of the following 1) they are so incompetent they didn't realize it was broken 2) it was behind schedule but someone's bonus was riding on making the 6/30 website release date so it was dropped 3) some security bug was discovered at the last moment (for example, spoofed ownership) so it got pulled. |

I've gone from sad and disappointed by BN to disgusted and annoyed. After years of buying Nook books exclusively, I've pretty much transitioned entirely to Kindle in the last 3 months, and if there was even the slightest chance I'd buy another Nook book, it's been obliterated by this dysfunctional new web site.

Thanks! That gave me my first clue, but didn't (by itself) solve the problem. My screen wasn't showing the "Sign In" or "My Account" boxes.
I'm running NoScript and discovered that they've added something new. I had to go to NoScript and enable js-bn.com. Once I did that, the two boxes appeared and I was able to get in. |

Lets be fair -- noscript is not B&N's fault.

I mostly just wanted to make a joke about how it's the ONLY thing...
Anyway B&N are doing nothing in that regard that pretty much everyone else isn't doing. An unfortunate disadvantage of having javascript is that website designers end up depending on it for the most basic elements. |

Unfortunately, the UK web site hasn't been updated - it's still not possible to view all the books I own through the web site.

I would bet that's only really meant to apply to physical items. I'd guess they didn't even think about that message when they made it possible to put Nookbooks in the shopping bag.

To the folks mad that they can't download from the website, are you running Linux?
On Windows or Mac, where you can install Nook for PC or Nook Study, why does it matter if you can download directly from the website? It seems a minor loss. If you're on a Linux machine, where that was the only option, then yeah, I totally get where you're coming from. Would WINE run either of the desktop programs? |

Leaving aside the fact that only knowledgeable people know to hunt down links for the desktop applications...
Why should one install extra, useless programs on their computer, contributing to bloat, simply because one runs Windows? I mean, I get it that Windows users are computer illiterate and just install anything shiny ![]() ![]() ![]() Seriously, though, there are plenty of valid reasons to want to download from their website. Including the fact that it is nevertheless highly embarrassing for B&N to have their site Just Not Work. And people love to criticize them here. ![]() |
