Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not sure Alf's tools are legal in the U.S. This makes me uncomfortable using them.

That's a big part of the concern for me.

Ripoff aside ... $30 isn't all that much to pay for the convenience of a Windows executable. But who knows how old the source is they've used? Or what they may have snuck in the binary? If it works—it works—I guess, but it would seem pretty fragile to me. One small change on the vendor side of things has you spending another $30 when that binary version you have is rendered useless and unable to be updated.

Then add the unabashed horking of someone else's free code (for your own profit) and calling it your own on top.

I use them to be able to use my books on the device of my choice and to have them backed up so I do not have to worry if they suddenly become unavailable. And I have noticed that some of the books I bought from B&N and Amazon are no longer available to download. Not to mention that there have been case where people had the books summarily removed from their devices without their consent.

It's because of things like this that I recommend Windows for dealing with eBooks and DRM. No other OS is as good as Windows for this.

This, BTW, as far as I know is legal where I live, and I do it with a legally bought Windows program that sells for about $30 -- it produces un-DRM'd .mobi files, which I can then convert to .epub with Calibre (which I hate) if I want to.
If you do the DRM removal with Calibre and the DRM removal plugin, you would not be stuck with obsolete Mobipocket eBooks and instead would be able to get KF8 eBooks which format shift to ePub much better than Mobipocket converts to ePub. Whoever sold you that program ripped you off big time.

There is a very strong case that can be made for the legality of DRM removal tools. When Tor first went DRM, a number of eBook stores (including Amazon) were not properly selling Redshirts (the first Tor DRM free eBook) without DRM. Both the author (John Scalzi) and Tor authorized the use of the DRM removal tools to remove the DRM.

There is also Fair Use which gives you the right to remove DRM. And also, the DMCA has exceptions on the removing of DRM.

So between all of these, the chances are that removing DRM is more legal then not. Also, given that a publisher and author both authorized the use makes it legal to have these tools.

So don't worry about it being illegal as it most likely isn't.

Just saying....I most happily read my nook books on nook devices....but I feel much more content knowing that I can download these ebooks to my computer and have access to them on other devices. I may not own the ebooks, but I have paid for them. $$$ should at least give me access on whatever device I choose to use. Thank you to all the people that have made this possible to far!

The DeDRM plugin does not turn a mobi7 into a KF8, it depends on the format delivered by Amazon.

The ripoff tools will do the same -- or maybe they are old enough to fail entirely on books delivered as KF8, in which case hapless users will get upset and eventually find Alf's tools.

Since nobody had any suggestions, I figured it out myself. It turns out that NOOK for PC needs a native wininet.dll. I'm using Wine 1.6.2.

You can get it by downloading and installing IE7. I don't think it matters, but I unchecked the "install updates" box.

Run winecfg, click Libraries and add an override for "wininet.dll (native, builtin)". I don't know if it matters, but I have my Windows version set to XP.

Download and install NOOK for PC. Run it, login and start downloading your books.
