The new tools have instructions on how to remove B&N's new DRM. Basically, you have to install Nook for PC or Nook Study. Then grab the key from a text file.

Have you changed your default credit card or other account info? People who have done that have been switched to a non-credit-card-based encryption key. But if you haven't, they may just be getting more proactive about switching people over to the new system. Basically, their intention is to prevent sideloading of nookbooks.

As Fbone said, there are new instructions for a work-around in the latest version of the tools (6.1.0). Ask over at Alf's if you need any more help.

Well, today I made the happy discovery that as long as the *only* thing you change in your B&N payment info is to update the credit card expiry on your default, then the system sticks with using the old keygen method for books downloaded after that.

So if anyone's been having problems using the workaround new key-getting method and haven't changed their B&N account info otherwise, then maybe this could be of use to them.

I also made the unhappy discovery that the B&N UK site doesn't actually let you update your CC info in situ, and does a delete/replace which puts you on the new DRM key-generating system.

In retrospect, I should have logged into the UK account via the main site and then updated the CC expiry date from there.

That said, from then on if you make any further changes, such as modifying your billing address name (which does change the key again), and then changing it back, you do go back to using the "old" new key from before you made said minor changes after you've reverted, so there is some consistency in how the new version works. Hopefully someone will be able to figure it out.

Hmmm, sounds like the new keys are still partially based on the name. It's just that the other ingredient is not the cc# anymore.

Whatever that "new" ingredient is, it has always been in the specification. For example encrypted books are still able to be read with the original Nook Classic (at least so far in my tests). So this has always been a option for them, they just haven't used it until now.

The devices download the key as part of their handshakes with the server. Even if the server generates a completely random key for each user, old devices will still work.

Yes, I suspect that it is indeed generated from some random number, but who knows. Interesting that it's still connected to the billing name. I would have thought the key itself was a random string of the correct length assigned to the account. At least there is only one current key per account no matter which device/app/script you use to download your books. I did find another way besides Nookstudy to get the key. It requires a rooted Nook HD though.

Forgive me if this is somewhere in the thread -- but is there a short explanation of what you did? Does this require rooted but stock ROM?? I have two Nook HDs -- both are running CM 10/11 -- I could reinstall a stock ROM if necessary.

Detailed discussions of DRM removal techniques are still not permitted at MobileRead.

Good news. I hope someone has written more about it on Alf's blog.

Apologies for not reading through the entire thread where there very well be an answer, but I received a Kindle Voyage for Christmas. My previous reader had been a Nook and trying to support the "little guy," I'd bought ebooks through B&N. Well, sad to say, the Voyage is a far superior reader to the Nook, and Amazon's service is as well. I'd like to transfer my previously bought Nook books to the Voyage, but as people in this thread state, the download option is gone from B&N. Is there an easy way to retrieve these books? I still have my old Nook if that makes a difference--although Calibre doesn't seem to see them.

You can download nook Study, which will allow you to download all your books to your computer. You'll then need the DeDRM plugin from Apprentice Alf's blog, although there is a bit of manual fiddling needed to get the DRM key.

For further help with DRM removal, you'll have to ask elsewhere (i.e. not on MobileRead).

Of course, as mentioned upthread, NOOKStudy still works with some operating systems, but not all.

If you're using Windows, I'd recommend Nook for PC to download your books as it can be set to download all books automatically. Whereas, Nookstudy will only download one at a time. You'll still probably need Nookstudy to retrieve your key. (As well as calibre and Apprentice Alf to be able to convert the epubs to kindle format.)
