I often find that the tools don't work when I import a lot of books into Calibre in one batch, but if I add them one at a time it always works fine. Seems to be some sort of timing issue.

That does explain much. And I seem to be talking a lot about DRM removal. My apologies.

Is there an easy way to tell if the tools have worked on epubs? Back when the download buttons were first removed from B&N's site, I added a big batch of books to calibre. Not all of them got processed. I think I've found and re-added those that got missed. But is there any quicker way to be sure then opening them all one by one?

Unfortunately I can't think of any way. Sorry.

For me, the Count Pages plugin hasn't worked if the tools plugin hasn't worked. You can use Count Pages with a multi-highlighted book list (i.e. select the books you want to check).

The way I spot-check is to see if there's a cover image. In an epub, the images are encrypted, so you get the default brown book cover if the tools didn't work.

Don't lump Kobo in on this. The Kobo Desktop software works well and using the current versions of OBOK and Modify ePub, it's very easy to convert a kepub back into an ePub.

Besides, for box standard ePub with adept DRM, you do have a download link on the Kobo website. You cannot say anything like that for B&N and Amazon (unless you own a physical Kindle).

Too many Amazon eBooks added to Calibre at one time and the DRM removal tools don't work. I know for certain that 5 eBooks at a time do work.

Use the Calibre eBook viewer to check. If the eBook loads, it's DRM free. If it fails to load, it still has DRM.

That is of course one method, but it's not very feasible if you have 1000 books in your Calibre library and you just want to know if any of them have DRM. An idea for a new plug-in, perhaps? (unless one already exists?)

Here is a python script which when given the path to an ebook, will report on its DRM status. It only accepts one file, so you will have to setup a loop, to go through all your books and check each one. The only issue is it will claim AZW3 books are MOBIs, but the check still works so who cares.

DRM Check: Find out what DRM that ebook has got.

EDIT: Saw HarryT's post.

I am sure this could be bundled into a plugin, since most of the work is already done.

You mentioning plug-ins rang a bell, and after checking calibre, I see that the Quality Check plug-in actually will check for DRM. I've never used it though.

I totally forgot about that option in the Quality Check plugin. Well spotted.
