Keep in mind, that WINE requires configuring each WINEPREFIX in various ways. And WINE is also yet another download, depending if you count that. Have you ever used linux and/or WINE? I guess not. This is fairly common knowledge, but only to those who have ever had to install something in WINE. It is somewhat of a pain in the neck to have to work with, but that's what we have to work with... Also, you need python and pycrypto running in WINE as well, the linux bundle in calibre doesn't cut it. Or you could try running calibre in WINE... No, the plugin should happen automatically, assuming you use the default WINEPREFIX. Last edited by eschwartz; 12-03-2014 at 06:54 PM. |

There is no reason for Amazon to support K4PC any longer. They have the Kindle Cloud Reader that has the same functions with improved layout except the files are encrypted. Option #2 was less favorable for my particular situation. All the Kindle books I have are free self-pubbed titles. I probably will never read any of them. If somehow Amazon deletes them from my library or they go out-of-business, I wouldn't miss them. However, if someone highly recommends a title that I have, I can download and convert. Option #3 is probably OK for those just starting out and have few titles. Unfortunately, I have many thousands of Kindle books and it would probably take Calibre days to convert them all and risk conversion errors. When I asked the IT guys what I should do, they were thinking 5 to 10 years down the road. A Kindle device would be better than relying on K4PC in my situation. |

It doesn't matter whether or not K4PC continues to be supported in the future; the point is that it works now and is (IMHO) the easiest way to get your books into Calibre. If something happens to it in the future, worry about it then.

This is precisely why I would always, always, recommend that you remove DRM as soon as practicable after buying the book. That way it doesn't matter what happens to K4PC or any other toolset in the future.

I thought the DRM was automatically removed by adding the files to Calibre and that it was no longer necessary to do a mobi to mobi (or epub) conversion. So, I thought I was fine.

It is automatically removed if you have Alf's tools installed. But not by a "clean" Calibre installation.

The key is only used at the time that the DRM is removed, so if you download a book in K4PC, and then for some reason have to uninstall and re-install the K4PC software before you've added the book to Calibre, DRM removal isn't going to work. But if you do as I do, which is to download a book and immediately add it to Calibre, then that will always work. I keep the K4PC download folder ("My Documents\My Kindle Content") pretty clean, because the more books you have in it, the longer K4PC takes to start up.

That sounds like the most likely explanation - perhaps you didn't install a required tools update? It's easy to tell if it's worked or not: a Kindle book which hasn't been processed by the tools will have a file type of "AZW", while one which has been processed will be either "Mobi" or "AZW3", so if you filter your Calibre library by file type and find "AZW" books, you have a problem.
