That may have been it. When it didn't work I just deleted it. I think it was tied to my outdated credit card though and that may be why it didn't work. That and I had to update the plugin in Calibre.

It checks the card for me. My credit card expired 10/31 and it wouldn't let me get a free book just now. I tested a few weeks ago with a free book, so I know I am on the old drm.

I spoke to them on a live chat. They apologized but said they did it so people would not sideload. I told the person I was chatting to tell the higher-ups that it is no wonder they are losing money on Nook. I wanted to put it on Calibre to be able to sort the books, since my Nook doesn't sort them. I don't think they care.

It doesn't prevent you from sideloading content purchased elsewhere onto your Nook device.

However, it does prevent you from purchasing from B&N if you want to sideload onto a non-Nook device.

So basically, it doesn't prevent the problem, as B&N sees it, it just reduces B&N's revenue.

Especially in that it reduces the likelihood that owners of non-Nook devices will buy from them.

It also reduces the likelihood of some Nook owners buying books from them. I do not have to sideload B&N books to my Nook HD+. I do download them to strip DRM and back them up however. Making me jump through extra hoops in order to download my purchases makes me less likely to buy from them. The money I might have used to purchase books from B&N is now going to their biggest competitor Amazon. There is nothing like upper management that likes to shoot itself in the foot through sheer shortsighted greed and ends up backfiring on them.

It has the exact opposite effect from the one that they want. I can download and read Google books on my Nook HD just as easily as nookbooks. Plus, I know I will be able to read them on my Kobo and any other device.

They go from having the most flexible, least obtrusive drm to the most restrictive. Before you didn't have any number of devices limit. Now even Amazon is slightly more flexible with Family Library.

It may have been said before, I don't remember. But I suspect, despite what they're saying, that this was part of their deal with Samsung. If Samsung is going to get involved with a specially branded Nook, they're going to want a walled garden like Amazon has.

Agree. This change means that once they reject my bank card and I have to enter a new one, it most likely will no longer work where I'll be able to sideload my books to Kobo or Sony.

I'll wait until that day and verify that I can't get it to work, but if it really doesn't as others have run into, that's when I stop buying any books from B&N. It's a shame too, for awhile I was splitting my purchases pretty evenly between Amazon and B&N. They will have fully forced me over to the Dark Side with this change!

When did they start doing this? I have never had a Kindle device. I only read on my tablet or occasionally on my pc. I have always used my Kindle for PC app on either my desktop or laptop to purchase (if that is the correct word when "buying" a free book) ebooks either free or otherwise.

After being burnt by pdb and lit formats (thank you calibre for the ability to convert these) I would never buy an ebook I can't "clean" and store for use on any device I choose. It would be like purchasing a paper book I could only read in a single chair... if the chair was thrown out I could no longer reread it.

Kindle for PC IS an Amazon program that JSWolf was referring to as one of the options to be able to download from Amazon. You still don't need to own a Kindle, but you do need to download through one of Amazon's programs or Kindle apps. So you're still safe buying from Amazon and downloading through Kindle for PC, nothing there has changed.

Just for the record, that is the same for B&N, in my case. It is for a new card and includes purchases made yesterday.

Luck;

That is what JSWolf was saying... he said you cannot download through the browser at http://amzn.com/myk unless you have a hardware Kindle, and are limited to running an Amazon program i.e. Kindle for PC/Mac to do the downloading for you.
