I'm using Firefox on Win 7 and Win 8.1. All I did was go to amazon.com and type in Kindle for PC and one of the first few results was the link to the page and from there, I got the link to download the program.

Textbooks, for example, are usually Print Replica. You will need a tablet, either an app or the Fire, to read them (I think the PW may do them also).
The current count (as of this morning) is 73 books. This number includes the types eschwartz described as well as books that include audio features, such as those labeled, "A Sing 'N Count Book" or "Free Audio Book Inside".

what if I had to reformat the C: drive in windows?

If I had to reformat the C: drive (boot drive) in windows as a reinstall of win7 or install of "win 9" next year, will I need to re-download the kindle books again? I don't see any way to have the books downloaded to a different & "safer" place as in another drive; no configuration of the Kindle app that I can see.

I will be doing the DeDRM for Calibre to reformat to epub then to my Nook HD+ & Nexus 7 where I will do the reading using the Aldiko reader. At this point, I will still have the ebooks & hopefully won't need to reference the books that may no longer be on the reformatted drive.

Never liked the way B&N handled their books in the Nook 1st edition in separate places for B&N books & books from other vendors. Amazon looks to be doing the same thing!

But the biggest problem is to have everything stupidly installed on the boot drive which will be reformatted when doing a "clean" install of a new OS (or reinstall of an old OS).

Amazon has never partitioned the drive on the Kindle to separate Amazon ebooks from non-Amazon ebooks.

Kindle books are safe on a cloud but I would download a copy and move it to Calibre then backup your Calibre Library to a external drive or thumb drive and then to a cloud service. There's no need to keep Kindle books on your PC unless you are reading them or use them for reference. You can download them when needed from Amazon.

Once I buy a Kindle book I send it to K4PC to be move to Calibre then I delete it from K4PC's Kindle content folder. I keep a mirror of my Amazon Library on Calibre which is accessible by cloud from any device using Dropbox app.

You will need them if you are accused of running afoul of Amazon's terms of service and have your account closed. No, it doesn't seem to happen frequently but I'd rather be prepared. I keep all my books from all vendors on my pc and disinfected. Also, if Amazon no longer has a license to sell a particular book will it still be available for you to download?

Yes they will not remove a book. They got in trouble years ago for that. You did hear me say I move the books to calibre and have a mirror of my library in Calibre? There's no need to keep them in Kindle 4 PC if you don't read them from there.

The last time Amazon stopped selling eBooks, the ability to download your purchased eBooks went away as well. If this Hatchette fight gets to the point where Amazon isn't selling Hatchette eBooks, I would not be so sure you'd be able to download any you've purchased. So yes, be prepared. Download and strip the DRM, and backup and you'll be safe.

Oops, missed that. One can never have too many backups.

There is one reason to keep them in Kindle for PC. That's so you'll know you've already downloaded them. But I would think once a year to download your library again as eBooks do get updated and we don't get notified. This does happen at Amazon and with ePub. I've downloaded my Amazon library in July and found a number of them were updated just based on the fact that I had more AZW3 then I did before.

I was wondering about that myself. I can't imagine it going that far, but who knows.

Me, i would not risk it. Given the way this Author's United nonsense is going, it could very well happen if they manage to piss off Amazon enough.

I don't need to keep track as I send all books I buy to K4PC then move them to Calibre so if they are in Calibre then I downloaded them.

I have auto updates on but I seldom find my books have been updated. I have to email Kindle support and give them the order number and they update the book in my library.
