I haven't had a crash per se, but this happens constantly:

I did not say you were lying. I said you were atypical, but good for you.

What is the therefore?

Part of that support Amazon has for Kindle for PC is to create new versions which are not compatible with the DRM removal tools. The Windows 8 version is one such version. We are just lucky that the DRM tools are able tow rok with the current desktop version.
I have not had to redownload the tools for any change. And looking at the seven entries in the changelog on Alf's site, the (sporadic) updates have not had anything to do with updating the DeDRM scheme. So please stop making things up.

The Win8 app is not even the same product as K4PC, why are you trying to confuse the issue?

Not everyone has a Kindle. Some use the apps, some strip the DRM to convert to read in a different format. So you cannot say that Amazon has a download button because for a lot of people, there isn't such a button.
Amazon has a button for some people. B&N has a button for no one.

Sideloading using Windows 8 (Store) Nook app

I decided to see if I could get my content from the Windows 8 Nook app (which I understand is also being discontinued, but that's another story). I downloaded my books through the app, and then I found the .epub files in this directory, which I could then import into Calibre the same way I used to do it through the web site. This is the directory path to find the epubs:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\BarnesN oble.Nook_ahnzqzva31enc\LocalState

Because a lot of people who run Windows 8 think it's the same enough, install it and use it and then cannot get their eBooks. Also, on a lot of computers, Kindle (name of the Win 8 app) comes pre-installed.

AppData is a well and truly hidden directory, and hard to get in to if you don't know the tricks. But it's there.

One of the first things I do is turn on file extensions and hidden files because it's just really annoying not to be able to see things properly.

Therefore, "people are stupid." / "so what?"

The fact that Yet Another Kindle App exists does not invalidate the existence of the other one which works fine.

What does one have to do with the other? Or is today Irrelevant Tangents Day and no one told me?

There is only one book left that I am unable to download via Nook for PC. It was a freebee, so I'm not that concerned about it. The whole situation is maddening as we have all discovered. Anyway, good luck to those of you still struggling.

If "actively support" means having to Google K4PC because it's not on their free app page but buried in Amazon's help section ...

Agreed it looks like Amazon might pull what they did to Android users. Their new apps only work on Android 4 and up. They no longer support Gingerbread.

Lucky you! If only your experience were typical. Sadly, the number of posters here and in other online forums indicates it's not.

Well, yes, I have noticed this happen in the last few days. Note that it still works well, and you *should* be able to get the link emailed to you.

And Nook 4 PC has been hidden for a lot longer but mostly IT DOESN'T RELIABLY WORK.

Well, while this is possibly true, it is definitely not certainly true. It is very common for people to go online post negative reviews or complaints whenever they have problems or issues with a product or an app or whatever. It is not nearly as common for people to randomly logon to forums and post "Hey, no problems today, everything is working perfectly for me!"

So, this means you see lots of posts from people that are experiencing problems and it may be quite a lot of people, but it may still be a tiny percentage of the total population of users that are experiencing this issue. You may see a hundred, maybe even a few hundred people experiencing a problem. I can almost guarantee you are not seeing the thousands or tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people who are experiencing no issues whatsoever, because most just don't post. Why would they? They're not experiencing any issues.

JSWolf's experiences may be atypical or they may be normal. I don't believe anyone on here has enough detailed knowledge of the problem as a whole to make that assumption. If his experience is atypical, then mine is as well, because I too have used the Nook for PC application for a number of years and have never experienced the issues with crashes, lockups, and error codes listed here. For those of you that have, I am truly sorry for your issues.

It works fine. All I use it for is to download eBooks that I can then load into Calibre with no DRM. I have never had a crash.
