In a general sense, yes. However K4PC is actively developed and generally works decently. Nook4PC hasn't been updated since 2011, is hidden on their site (was taken down entirely & only put back when people complained) and generally doesn't work very well. I have just over 1,000 books in my B&N library and the software generally is slow & sometimes won't even load (on multiple machines).

Nook Study can be installed to wine with no problems. Ether in a separate 32 or 64 bit wineprefix or the base wine prefix.

Nook for PC can be installed using Play on Linux, it has to be installed in a 32 bit playonlinux wineprefix using wine 1.4.1.

Amazon doesn't advertise Kindle for PC like they did previously. I just tried the link they now email you to download it and received a '404' error and was redirected to their app page.

I searched Amazon and found a direct download link in their "Help" section.

That's the windows 8 app not the PC version. The PC version isn't listen anymore but can be found by googling.

This is what Amazon's email says. No mention of Win 8. IAC, it didn't work on my PC.

To get the app, open this email on your phone or tablet, then click the link below to download the free app. You can also click this link on your PC or Mac to download the free program.
I just hope Amazon will keep a version of K4PC going and not just discontinue it like they did last year with the previous one.

Thanks for the pointers and links. Right now the Greasemonkey script is working and I've downloaded all my books and have safely stored them in Calibre -- but if the Greasemonky script quits working I'll look into Nook Study (I don't know if I want to add Play on Linux just so I can install Nook for PC).

Again, thanks.

It says Or get it at the Windows store. That means it's a Window 8 app. the email just gives you same link you put the your email in at the first place.

However you can get the non Windows 8 version by going to Help on the site.

I haven't owned a Nook in years, and this isn't making me want to.
You can still buy ePub from B&N and load them on your Sony. You have two choices how to do this. One is to install Greasemonkey in Forefox and use the alternate Download button that gives you or install nook for PC (desktop only, do not use the Windows 8 version) and use that to download the ePub to your computer.

Then you can use your normal way of stripping the DRM and then onto your Sony from there.

When I first read about the download button being removed, I installed nook for PC and download all of my ePub from B&N and I had no problem stripping the DRM. In fact, some of the ePub in my B&N library had actually been updated since originally bought.

I've used Barnes and Noble Desktop Reader and now nook for PC to download eBooks from B&N. I've never had any crash or considerable slowdown. I've had more problem with Kindle for PC then I have nook for PC. The problems have been having to log back into Amazon to retell the system to resend the eBook. I've always been able to remove the DRM from either.

So, Amazon doesn't make it easy for you to be able to download eBooks to your Windows computer in a way that you can then strip the DRM. Sounds like both Amazon and B&N are doing very similar things.

Except that Amazon allows you to download from MYK if you have a physical device. And Amazon actively supports Kindle 4 PC. I do not know why you have had an atypical experience, but most people have the opposite result -- K4PC works flawlessly and Nook 4 PC crashes horribly.

I have never had nook for PC crash at all. Not once. Never. Been running nook for PC on Windows 7 for a long time.

Part of that support Amazon has for Kindle for PC is to create new versions which are not compatible with the DRM removal tools. The Windows 8 version is one such version. We are just lucky that the DRM tools are able tow rok with the current desktop version.

Not everyone has a Kindle. Some use the apps, some strip the DRM to convert to read in a different format. So you cannot say that Amazon has a download button because for a lot of people, there isn't such a button.

Here's the difference -- for me at least. When I connect my Kindle(s) to my computer, I can see all the books I bought from Amazon using Calibre -- as long as they are loaded on my device. From there I can "move them" to my library. I can't do that with the Nook. The only books I see on the Nook are side-loaded ones, not the ones I bought from B&N. So, without the download link at B&N (if it didn't work with Greasemonkey) I wouldn't be able to download my Nook books at all. So, for me, it's definitely not the same.

nook for PC desktop edition works just fine for download your B&N ePub and then moving them to Calibre to do with as you please.
