The one good thing about the chain bookstores going out of business is that indie bookstores are surging.

Done with B&N. They've closed 2 of the most convenient stores to me anyway and of the 2 remaining, 1 is an absolute bear to find parking and the other isn't much better.

In some ways I'm sad. I grew up always going into B. Dalton or Waldenbooks every time we went to the mall. Then there was Book Stop (may have been regional), Borders (none around me anymore), Books a Million (none around me anymore), and now, I'm not all that sure B&N has a long future.
I'm not thrilled about it either. The B&N near me didn't have great customer service (as in good luck finding someone to help you, they may or may not be willing to stand at the computer and order something for you and if the B&N twenty to thirty minutes down the road had the inventory you could go drive there and get it yourself because they wouldn't order it or have it sent to the local store). But as a buyer and an author...we need more than Amazon. I know more and more publishers are going direct to the customer and that's great too, but I can't walk in and browse at a Simon and Schuster store.

Or perhaps instead of small mom&pop indie coffee shops, there could be a national chain of small franchised coffee shops. Or sandwich shops, or tire store, or any other marketable small shop operation that can be franchised.

"Indie" or national franchise? The "mom&pop" coffee shop or Starbucks?

Are books any different?

I think there is a difference between B&N and Amazon that has been overlooked. With Amazon you can not only download to the ereader, and the PC app but you can download a book to your PC and then side load it to your ereader as well. B&N did have it where you could download it to your PC and then to a reader but with their 'change' in policy you can no longer do that. So Amazon still has more options than B&N now do.

You can still use your NookPC reader and it will download to a "My Barnes & Noble eBooks" folder (and, at least with my test purchase, it now includes some of the title and is not all numbers).

As long as they leave a way for me to disinfect my purchases, I can buy from them. I can still complain and condemn them for their stupid measures to restrain trade with them, though. (Either action, will have about the same effect on their practices, none.)

Yes, but they used to allow download to PC just like Amazon still does and now they have less options rather than the same ones (though different formats) that Amazon has. I'm not saying that they don't still have a method of doing so, just that rather than 3 options like Amazon now they only have 2.

The advantage that Amazon retains over B&N by keeping the ability to download the file using a browser (requiring no special reader program), is that with essentially any browser/any computer/anywhere, you can still buy new content and load it on your device to read using the usb cable.

When I'm stuck at Aunt Matilda's house for the week with no Wifi, I can still use her wired computer to buy/download/sideload new content to my reader so I don't go insane.

Now when I'm in that situation, B&N wants me to either:
1) Download, install/configure the Nook for PC program (if it will run on Aunt Matilda's computer) to get the one new book I purchased (and then uninstall it because Aunt 'Tildie is so persnickety about her computer).

2) Borrow 'Tildie's car to go to McDonalds to get the book I purchased (on her computer) using their Wifi. Which means I'll have to top-up 'Tildie's tank (again ... persnickety).

3) Go insane (possibly harming Aunt 'Tildie and making Thanksgiving dinner incredibly awkward).

B&N/Nook is clearly indicating (with this change) that they hate my Aunt Matilda and quite possibly Thanksgiving in general. I'm done with them

Please read this, B&N has no con-sept of customer service.
NOOK Study Knowledge Base
If I previously purchased a NOOK Study digital content, can I read it on Yuzu?

Yuzu is B&N new study app, it is not compatible with the old Nook Study.

Not only that, with Yuzu offline use is only possible if you have an iPad - otherwise, it's online-only access via a web browser.

Which Tor books did you look at? I'm curious to get a sample from B&N and see if they really are ePub 3 or ePub 2. Unlocked and Lock In[/i] are both ePub 3 and at Kobo are both kepub only.

Asking me to leave my house to take possession of my digital purchase is asinine beyond belief. It defeats the purpose of digital purchases entirely.

I have a B&N gift card someone gave me and I'm going to take my son to pick out some pbooks, because there is no way I'm buying another ebook from them.

Those that use the Windows 8 app are screwed. as that's a heaping pile of pain in the a$$ to be able to fix the eBooks to be able to strip the DRM.

All B&N is doing is trying to make it harder for customers to get at the eBooks to then be able to strip the DRM.

But don't you need a Kindle device to do that? I don't have a "download & transfer via USB" option.

Yes. You would need a kindle device to take advantage of that feature.
