Finding the Script

I can't remember what prompted me to install it, but I've used it off and on, and I tested it with a book just now to confirm it still works, despite all the Download buttons being missing.

ETA: Also, I opened up my Nook for PC program (and I'll admit, it's probably an older one - I can't figure out how to tell what the version is) and it's busily downloading the books I've bought since the last time I opened it. So that's another way to get your downloads.

ETA-2: I remembered why I installed it - it allows you to download books from the Archive, without moving them back to active. Just a time saver.
Thanks for the information Fizzy Water. Do you happen to know where the script can be found, I've had no luck finding it so far?

Here's a link to install it without having to deal with copy/pasting scripts and moving them in the right directories:

I suspect that's going to be true for this download script as well. I would think all it would take would be to change the file locations (add another folder layer, for example) to make the script stop working. I don't know if the developer is interested in keeping it up-to-date.

I installed Greasemonky and copied the script, but can't figure out how it all works. Fortunately, I was able to download all but 2 or 3 ebooks from my Nook account. Just double checking that I have them DRM free and then I will move on to Kobo to check all of those.

If you look through the thread, someone posted one that works - I think it's now userscripts-mirror.org.

ETA: Here it is:

Right now you can use your Android device to grab your books via their app. I did this and it works great as my Nook Library has been messed up for a long time meaning some pages I get gibberish on so I was never able to download certain books from last year but I got them now.

Oh it seems all Nook support is doing it pasting the same can response over and over. Reminds me of Target last Christmas.

There's an install button in the upper right. Or just swap userscripts-mirror for userscripts for the link:

They apparently tried to kill it some time back, or so I've read, then relented in the face of a backlash, and haven't promoted it since, but the download link is in the top page of a Google search for "nook for PC".

And if they break it, there will be an even bigger backlash than there is now, and it's already fairly ugly.

I suspect that the script, and the desktop apps, download using the same mechanisms as the readers do. If so, they can't break the stuff they don't like without breaking the devices - all of them, without an update, and they're not going to update the stuff that's been out of production for years.

If they suddenly break 95% of everything out there in the way of nook readers, they'll be facing a class action lawsuit, and rightly so.

By the way, someone posted on the Digital Reader's blog an alternate link to the script via the "Internet Wayback Machine" at https://web.archive.org/web/20131112...ts/show/152985

I'd say 2011. When B&N released the Nook Simple Touch and the Nook Color, that was the one time Amazon had to catch up. I think the Nook Color was the first "dedicated" eReader tablet. But B&N soon gave back the lead. I still think the Nook Simple Touch was (still is for me) one of the best eReaders made.

But not allowing downloads and not giving warning they were going to change their policy, that's just about the end of the line for me and B&N.

I've been thinking about this. If this was some other store it wouldn't matter but this is B&N not some small ebook store. It's always been Kindle vs Nook. If we let them get away with this then more stores could follow this pattern to where you will be left with app or device reading only.

Right now you can sideload but I am sure this is only a step before they fix it to where you no longer can.
