It's not so much about the source code for the entire system, but about the stuff the GPL obliges them to make accessible, at least on request. As far as I know manufacturers like Sony or Samsung do comply with that (albeit not to an ideal extent either in all cases).

I'm far from an expert, Kobo from what little I remember reading abides by gpl license. They definitely don't try to prevent you from changing your kobo's software.

Well I have been watching these threads for a while. I really want to purchase a 13.3 ebook reader. Tempted by maxboox as at least it is out there and able to be brought! I am watching the ebookreader indigo website too, but they just keep delaying!
I will mainly be using an ebook reader of this size to read my technical manuals. (Cisco study guides etc)
However I am curious to see what the users experience has been like for people who have already purchased this product.
Also I have just been trailing readly (a magazine subscription service) and I was wondering if this is able to run on the MAXBOOX? As that would be pretty cool.

I think I will make a purchase around December time. I was hoping to see reviews from the goodereader and onyboox max.

If I don't go with these what is the best 9.7 ebook reader to go for.

I am still using my IREX 800, which is years old now, this has worked ok for PDF but the screen is a little small. And zooming is quite slow, and when I do this I loose diagram details etc.

So I am still looking for 13.3, it is a shame the sony is not for sale..

thanks for reading. (Just posted this in this forum as I did not get any replies from the Onyx boox max forum) Not sure if I am posting in the right place.

Paul.

Dasung is also producing a 13" device.

http://goodereader.com/blog/electron...-paper-monitor

They are aware of the potential of the device as a secondary monitor and focusing on it. They are doing it via Bluetooth. Onyx are also doing it. This IMO is a big flaw in the indiegoreader: no bluetooth.

It seems connecting as a secondary monitor is difficult to do, and Bluetooth is the simplest option.

Interestingly, though Boyue has no Bluetooth, they support USB OTG. I don't know if that means it could be used as a monitor. But they only do 6" devices anyway, so don't seem interested in bigger formats.

No, not only 6", they have a prototype with high resolution and bendable. A video show it ; http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201...ch-boyue-t103/

I don't think Dasung team will use bluetooth for pc screen sharing. As you can read on their twitter page (https://mobile.twitter.com/DasungTec...17120306237440), they are considering now to add Bluetooth after some musician fans asked them for it to use Bluetooth pedals.
I hope screen sharing will use HDMI. It should be more stable and faster.

Agreed, some kind of display port would be much better. Although the latest Bluetooth 5.0 seems much better than a previous one.

I hope that the refresh rate of this e-reader will be better (at least in A5, ideally A16). On their twitter Dasung wrote that it will take 2-3 months of testing, so hopefully we should know more around April.

Btw Jinx pageX is a new e-reader with a breathtaking refresh rate:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaWRlx13gdI

And is very similar (in specification) to the reMarkable device, but obviously much cheaper.

They have shipped ca 25 readers and are awaiting next shipments from Netronix within some weeks, probably the Chinese New Year celebration is impacting to some degree. A few buyers have commented on the Indiegogo site, IMO too early to draw conclusions yet. As I'm towards end of the queue, I'll probably need to wait still too many weeks to get my hands on it.

Btw, I'd personally like to have a sub forum on MobileRead for this reader, at least when most of the ~400 readers have been delivered, anyone knows how get a sub forum created?

You are probably correct, I've not searched. Remember that only ca 25 readers have been delivered so far, a few scattered comments from some users are available through this link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/1...8766#/comments

Actually I had a lot of respect regarding earlier activities of GoodEreader guys and was expecting more seriosity from their new 13.3" Good-E-reader-Netronix project. Since I am involved in development and distribution of e-readers for quite long time, I was curious about this project, watched it for months and sadly I have to say I am quite disappointed now. What I have seen in the time was kind of unrealistic promises and "alternative facts".

They promised, when they have fulfilled goal of $100k, they were going to change the Android version of their upcoming device to 5.1.1 http://clip2net.com/clip/m169244/ae0....png?nocache=1
It was impossible and they knew it! The goal has been achieved in short time. Until now they have collected over $300k and there is still 4.0.4. We are working for at least two years now to take into account all the factors of the hardware to migrate to 4.4. Upgrading of current hardware to 5.1.1 would be just impossible.

Their scheduled delivery "should be ready for shipping at latest in September 2016". I assume a lot of backers would think twice before placing of their orders, if they knew it will be rather May of 2017 for most of them.
As I mentioned to the time, those 13.3" screen with capacitive layer were not available for mass production yet. Not before the end of the 2016.

According to their updates on Indiegogo until now they got from Netronix just about 155 -160 items.
http://clip2net.com/clip/m169244/291....jpg?nocache=1
However they are reporting: "...Over the course of the past seven days we have shipped off hundreds of e-readers ...", which does not sound really credible.

Additionally, I noticed they are removing all comments about cancelling of orders and all requests for refund. Moderating this kind of of user's comments is very suspicious and is kind of unfair especially because they are using this crowd funding platform to promote and to finance their business idea. Because of editing of negative comments it looks like they just manipulate decisions of prospective backers.

I don't know. Perhaps making of unrealistic promises and dealing with "alternative facts" is getting more popular in some countries nowadays. There are eventually plenty of gullible people in the world. However IMHO the thing does not taste really good.
