Some books I have read lately and enjoyed.
The Battle of Trafalgar by Geoffrey Bennett. This is well written history of the battle and the events leading up to it. It also gives good insight to the lives of British sailors at the time. If you like the Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series you will enjoy this. well written and not dry like some histories.

The Peacemakers by Richard Herman was an excellent book and I gave it 5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and could not put it down.
http://www.amazon.com/Peacemakers-Ri...he+peacemakers

First Strike by Christopher Nuttall was enjoyable also. His books are always DRM free.
http://www.amazon.com/First-Strike-C...ywords=nuttall

Ark Royal also by Christopher Nuttall was good and is the first book in a four book series.
http://www.amazon.com/Ark-Royal-Chri...ywords=nuttall

Joshua Dalzelle's Warship is the first in a new series and I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
http://www.amazon.com/Warship-Black-.../ref=pd_ybh_16

The Dispatch Rider (K Company Book 3) by Robert Broomall was a good and enjoyable western read.
http://www.amazon.com/Dispatch-Rider...obert+Broomall

All three of Jay Worrall's Napoleonic Wars Series. I thoroughly enjoyed this series too.
Sails on the Horizon

Any Approaching Enemy

Hey!! Let's get some action going! What are we reading?

Last night I finished The Last Town (The Wayward Pines Trilogy, Book 3) by Blake Crouch and started reading I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb. Oddly enough, as very different these books are, they both used the word paradise to describe their respective homes. In the former, a sign post just outside the town's limits is mentioned in all three books of the series:
Quote:
WELCOME TO WAYWARD PINES WHERE PARADISE IS HOME
While in the latter, Malala gives this description of her hometown in the first chapter:
Quote:
"We lived in the most beautiful place in all the world. My valley, the Swat Valley, is a heavenly kingdom of mountains, gushing waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes. WELCOME TO PARADISE, it says on a sign as you enter the valley.
The similarities, I'm sure, end there, as the fictional town of Wayward Pines is hardly a paradise by anyone's standards, and Malala truly loves her home. The three Wayward Pines books are described as a trilogy, but the ending of the third left the door open for yet another sequel, and I would be amazed if a fourth book were not written to this excellent series.

Any comments about the Harry Bosch TV series? The books have all been a good read, and we're up to episode 6 of the TV series. Same old Harry, good cop liked by all except his bosses, etc. I'm enjoying it.

A short work, but excellent. Three related time travel stories wrapped inside a fourth. Highly recommended.

Finished Charlie Murphy, still working on Isaac Asimov's Gold, but taking it in little sips.

I am going to go with Tank Lords by David Drake. This is the first book about Hammer's Slammers, and free through Amazon for Kindle.

Finished The Paper Magician by Charlie Holmberg, my latest KLL loan. I wasn't that impressed. I probably won't be bothering with the sequel. The love story angle didn't seem to be earned and there were some annoying missteps in the portrayal of Victorian Britain by a non-native (a yearbook? really?). I guess it was readable enough, and short.

I can't remember if I posted here about Half the World by Joe Abercrombie, which I read before that. If not, I loved it. I thought it was a step up from the first volume, Half a King, which I also really liked. This one has two new viewpoint characters, and moves on the overall political plot while taking us to a new part of the world. I'm very much in favour of this YA publishing schedule which means the third book is also due out this year.

I'm not really sure what to read next. It probably shouldn't be another fantasy.

Hmmm. I didn't realise that this was a YA series. That rather puts me off it. I really enjoyed the "First Law" trilogy and I was hoping that these would be in same (very dark) style.

It doesn't read all that YA. Some of the darkness has been toned down, and the stories tend to involve coming-of-age, but whether it is actually being sold as YA depends on where you live.

I've not read them yet, but I've been assured that Joe hasn't fundamentally altered his style for these books. There's no sparkly rainbows or anything--it's still dark. There's just a younger protag and less F-bombs. It's my belief that the YA label was painted on this series with more of a marketing/financial brush than anything.

I finished 3 new Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind.

The Omen Machine
The Third Kingdom
Severed Souls

...and I'm left hanging waiting for more books. Ug... I hate that. I should have checked the status.

That said, all the books are quite enjoyable. It is good to go back and visit with Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, Cara and Nicci. If you liked the Sword of Truth series, you will like these. But, you may want to wait till he finishes the story arc.

I'm now reading Privateer: The Flight Engineer, Volume II by S. M. Stirling and James Doohan to see what Reeder has gotten himself into this time.
