Is it possible to use the New Oxford American Dictionary in KOReader instead of any of the StarDict Dictionaries?
Those are either too big or just not as good as the New Oxford American Dictionary.

I did save the settings. But SEARCH_LIBRARY_PATH does not change at all. It stays at "". Even if I set it to /mnt/us or /mnt/us/documents I still get the document not found error. Something seems to be drastically wrong

I don't understand, is it "" or is it "mnt/us/documents/" as you wrote before?
Try one more, check if you see a folder "temp" in the koreader folder. If yes, delete it. Then search again. Does it still find anything?

Partial good news! I tried multiple things so I don't know what made the difference. At least for pdf files it can locate the files and also open them However, it does not find any epub or djvu files , though they are in the Calibre library. Unfortunately, I have many more books in these formats so it will be great even if this can be done.

One of the things I did was to delete the metadata.calibre file in the root directory of the Kindle and put /mnt/us/ in the SEARCH_LIBRARY_PATH in defaults.persistent.lua and defaults.lua.

Now I would like to figure out how to get it working for the other formats

Thanks for all your help guys

There is no difference between pdf and epub for the search.
Are the epubs in the same metadata.calibre file? I still susepect you have two of them, and the second is not matched by SEARCH_LIBRARY_PATH2 anymore.
Open /mnt/us/metadata.calibre with a text editor and search for any epub file. Then open Koreader and search for exactly this file. Long tap on the search result and check the info on bottom, the path, plus either the file size or "file not found".
If file not found, compare this path with one of the PDFs that is working.
And if you have a second metadata.calibre anywhere set SEARCH_LIBRARY_PATH2 to the directory where you found it.
Also delete the "temp" folder within Koreader (or at least the metadata.koreader file in it) since this one is caching the results, and if something is wrong you still might get the wrong results.

UPDATE: There is only one metadata.calibre file at least in the /mnt/us/ directory. I opened the metadata.calibre file and was surprised to find that neither the epub or djvu files are there Then I remembered, that though I could add these files to the Calibre library on the desktop, when I wanted to transfer these files to the Kindle, Calibre asked me whether I want to convert them to mobi format. When I said no, it did not do anything. Ultimately, I had to copy them manually to my Kindle. Is that the reason why they are missing from metadata.calibre file? If so is there any workaround?

Deleted the metadata.koreader file. Did not make any change to the behavior

Like I said, long tap on one of the epub search results and check what exactly it says at "Path:" on bottom.

And of course there is just one metadata.calibre file in mnt/us (you can't have two in the same directory). But you might have another one somewhere else, and the EPUBs might be in that one, and if SEARCH_LIBRARY_PATH2 does not point to that directory anymore the EPUBs cnnot be found at all.

WS64, love your promptness and support

I searched my Kindle for metdata.calibre but could locate only one instance. I believe the problem is because of the following:

1. Kindle Touch does not handle epub or djvu formats unlike pdf.
2. Hence Calibre can not transfer files in these two formats to Kindle. (I do not allow it to convert these files to .mobi before transfer, hence it does nothing )
3. I have to put these files on my Kindle manually.
4. Since these files are not put on the Kindle by Calibre, metadata.calibre would not have any information about these files.
5. Because File Manager is getting all its information from the metadata.calibre file it can not locate these files, which is the case with my Kindle, it can not find any of the epub or djvu files.

Please let me know if my understanding is correct. The only workaround could be for the File Manager to actually search the documents directory on Kindle to locate files with specific names. I really do not know if that's possible or advisable

But you did find the files, you just could not open them...
I still wonder what the "PATH:" on long taps says in such a case.

In your case I would connect calibre to a folder on your Kindle (not connect to device but connect to folder), because then you can send the EPUBs there. And if you do that really in a different folder (not mnt/us) you would have two metadata.calibre and could use both at once.

The search function only works with metadata.calibre, it does not search through your file system.

Since the Kindle isn't supposed to handle epub/djvu files, Calibre probably won't populate the metadata for those file types when sending (actually, it probably won't send them as-is at all, and instead run a silent conversion to your preferred output format compatible with the Kindle). Try ticking those in Calibre's Kindle driver settings (supported formats), and resend your files, see if it helps.

EDIT: Or, what WS64 said, fake it with a connect to folder ;p.

If you add epub in Calibre's Kindle driver settings (supported formats) as NiLuJe suggested, Calibre will sent epub files to your kindle without converting them to mobi and also populate the metadata of those files. Works perfectly on my Kindles.

I did add epub and djvu as supported formats by using the Configure this device menu. Even then when I want to transfer these files to my Kindle touch, it wants to convert them No conversion, no transfer

The connect to folder menu is greyed out.

Interestingly, Calibre shows some of the epub or djvu files to be in the main memory, though they were put on the Kindle manually. Wonder how this happened and why only for some files
