Bookerly can be made to work with Kobo properly with ease.

It's changing the internal name to reflect the proper style if I recall correctly.

So it's possible you did this and have forgotten, someone else did this and provided you with the fixed font, or as has been pointed out RMDSK handling it with epubs.

Somewhat of a broader spectrum of possibilities.

Did not think of Fire devices at all, so I have no idea if the font shipped there differs, but it's possible. I can definitely only vouch for the eInk variant .

You can extract the fonts from the Kindle APK using apktool (it's just an unprotected asset in it).

That was from FW 5.11.2 & 5.12.4, respectively (probably for a PW4, not that it should matter all that much). It's in the stock fonts squashfs inside the rootfs image. I never remember the path, it's the java libdir/fontdir IIRC (EDIT: shell history FTW: /usr/java/lib/fonts.sqsh).

EDIT: I'm quite sure 5.11.2 is *NOT* the exact cutoff version for the "unhinting" update, FWIW. But I was too lazy to look it up ;p.

Oh, okay, apparently that's just Bookerly V 1.000 . (Latest eInk one is at 1.201, final usable one is 1.020).

I don't even remember *when* it was introduced on eInk, but I'd imagine it should match that .

From my notes, the last time I looked at the fonts in a Kindle firmware, they lived in rootfs.img.gz\fwo_rootfs.img\usr\java\lib\fonts.sq sh which I unpacked to a fonts folder to play with. I still get a chuckle out of seeing code2000.ttf in there.

Reminder to check why the .sqsh gets split in the sentence above.

whatever i did was way simpler than that. i am pretty sure that with a fire tablet you just connect it to a PC and windows copy from the fonts directory

for sure, I did not write or download any scripts, code.... to do the job
and I did it soon after bookerly was released, so I probably have the original version and have never upgraded

what has changed since v1 anyway ( apart from maybe adding this thread bug! ) and what is tinting please.
i doubt i will rush to change anything but I may as well understand what I am missing !

Click a quick review of Font hinting on Wikipedia. I've found that generally, I prefer non-hinted fonts on my eInk devices.

ah- so its Hinting, not Tinting, explains why my google search results were rubbish

is this one of those things where 99% of people cannot see the difference anyway, or is it worth learning about ( I am Ok with how my font looks as at now )
