My 2 year old vizplex Opus has better contrast than this. On another note I'd love yellow/sepia screen as long as letters were black.

![]() I know, it really does. I actually didn't even notice just how bad it was until I really started to read on it. When I first looked at it I actually thought it was fine until I really started to compare it to my PW1. Funny huh? I'll see what next year brings for the PW. I think it's going to take them awhile to really perfect it though. Just my opinion and then there's still the QC issues. I mean it's a bit crazy the difference between units. I can understand some small differences, but they seem to vary quite widely. |

Me too! With print books I have a better reading experience with dull paper rather than with really bright white paper, assuming both have a similar dark text/font.

Got my PW2 on Wednesday (upgrading from a K3) and noticed it has a tiny pinhole like light leak (similar to what you might call a "hot pixel' on an LCD screen) so I called Amazon and asked for a replacement. the new PW arrived yesterday and I compared the two side by side and was surprised at the difference. I put both on the same page of the same book and there was a distinct difference. The light original PW2 appears more cold/blue than the replacement which appears more warm/yellow. Thankfully I like the replacement better.

They are better than Paperwhites for reading at dusk by a window with music playing in the background. Plus, the AcroBible App for the Kindle Fire HD is far better than any Bible eBooks for the Paperwhites. Last year it took the AcroBible folks 2 months to get it to work on the Kindle Fire HD 2012. There could be a similar delay this year for the HDX 2013. |

It's funny that you mention this because I'm basically the opposite. I'm less inclined to visit the forums anymore because of the overwhelming negativity. Most of the threads have basically become negative feedback chambers for a small number of users with serious chips on their shoulders and people who need to be told what they should be thinking about their device-they can't even decide on their own!

My PW1 has two pin holes but you don't notice them while reading. I actually only found them about a month or two of use. I was so busy playing with fonts for the PW that I hadn't use it much for reading. I still love mine. My only concern was would pinholes get worse or affect the lifespan of the reader and it doesn't. So I can overlook pinholes if they do not affect my visibility. |

Was it like this last year with the Paperwhite 1? I am thinking about getting a PW2 but might wait if there's a chance that the defects will become fewer down the line.

Last year was the same but BUY NOW !!

That means the odds are almost NINE TO ONE that you will get a PERFECT PW 2013. I just wish I had those odds in my favor every time I invest in a stock. It appears all the complaints come here and many of the complainers do not own and will never buy a Paperwhite just like last year. |

I received my Kindle Paperwhite (PW) yesterday, which replaces my Kindle Keyboard (KK). I thought I would make some quick comments for those considering a similar upgrade.
Initially, I was surprised by the relatively small size of the PW. I guess I shouldn't have been, given that the PW does not have a physical keyboard. I try not to be obsessive about this sort of thing, but I did inspect the screen for obvious defects and found one white speck when viewing a black or nearly-black page on the screen. It's in a corner and is not visible when reading a book and so is not an issue for me. Screen brightness uniformity is very important to me, and fortunately my PW is quite good in that respect. The biggest change going from the KK to the PW is the touch interface. It takes some getting used to but I will like it in time--if for no other reason than the fact that navigating a book is so much easier. I'm old and my memory is poor, so I suspect the x-ray feature will also be quite helpful. One thing I miss is the physical page-turn buttons. I'm sure I'll get used to this in time. Also, the screen has a rough or scratchy surface (unlike my iPhone) and I don't like that. I'm not sure if this is a coating applied during manufacture or if the screen is just in need of cleaning. I purchased the official Amazon cover in black and I like it a whole lot. The PW snaps in quite securely, and it looks very professional. Also, I love the instant on/off feature and the magnetic latch. The Amazon cover for my KK had a elastic cord that kept the cover closed, and I got tired of always having to wrap this around the front cover. The total cost of the PW (without special offers) and cover including sales tax was $200, which is a lot for me. But, if I get as much use out of the PW as I have with the KK, it will be money well spent. |
