Just started watching the Firefly series this weekend in prep for the book. It really is good. And my memory is so bad that I have the unusual ability to watch movies and read books for the second time and it's almost as fresh and exciting as the first time around, except for a vague sense of familiarity!
Has anyone gotten into the book enough to share with us what it's like? (But without spoilers, please!) |

The book feels just like the series. It fits very nicely. I would read more

Firefly was a really great series. I wish they didn't cancel it. Battlestar Galactica is my current fav sci-fi show on t.v.
Top-notch writing for both shows. This book is really great so far and I'm new to this author, but he's made a new customer outta me. ![]() |

I cannot stand the new BSG. The old BSG was just so much better.

The real problem with NuBSG is that I don't care who dies. The characters are so bland. if they all perished, it would not matter.

And, I must say, I do prefer the old BSG.
But I am new here, I should probably wait to announce my entirely correct opinions until you learn to love me. |

I think both BSGs have their charme. I liked the old one, because it was a space soap, and when i was junger, that was fun.
I like the new one, because of its nice twists and turns, very flawed characters, but somtimes they are a bit too much. And the FX are nice. But i never try to get them in context. I see them as completely different stories, because once you get started, there are soooooo many inconsistencies. It would make your head spin. But Firefly still wins. Its just so real. And the characters are so sarcasitic. And they are really diverse and feel real. |

I think the worst plastic and uninteresting characters were in Space 1999. Saw it as a kid and got the set mostly for nostalgic reasons. I didn't like it much then and don't enjoy it much now. and just couldn't keep watching it.
Firefly, in my personal view, is the opposite. The characters are interesting and the dialog is witty. I can see where people would think them still artificial, though. Even with my bad memory, I need a few months to forget, but that's an interesting suggestion to revisit with the commentary track. I rarely want to watch with commentary tracks, but might enjoy it for Firefly... after I read the book, of course! ![]() |

Oh yeah, Space 1999 was really bad. William Shatner school of acting bad. I enjoyed the original BSG in its time, now I can't stand to watch it. I really loved the first two seasons of the new BSG but the I'm having a hard time watching the last season.
Babylon 5 is probably my favorite but I also really got into STNG and DS9. My now 14yo DS used to be mesmerized by the STNG theme when it came on. He also recognized all the characters. Also loved most of the Star Wars movies and turned my 14yo DS into a certifiable Star Wars nut. Firefly was very enjoyable and I was sad to see it cancelled. I need to go back and re-watch the series before I read the book. |
