This Is the "V2" version with a different nigthmode.ini.
Yes, you are right it is the same with a different nightmode.ini. But, that's not actually correct. YOUR version is the same as this one with a different nightmode.ini. What you have done is taken someone else's work and claimed it as your own. This is my problem. You might not have intended to do this, but the way you posted the hack makes it appear that way. And that it is different to the version already linked several times in this thread.

Your post also simply stated "except the Aura One", which is not actually true. Or at least not complete. It does work with the Aura one, just not in the way you want it to.

I have no idea what you the question is that you have added. So let me make a statement:

The version of the nightmode hack at https://github.com/gtalusan/kobo-nig...r/KoboRoot.tgz is the ONLY version that should be used with firmware version 4.2.8283 or later. This is applicable to all Kobo devices running these firmware versions.

This version has a complete copy of the nightmode.ini which is documented. Reading this file you can work out how to configure the nightmode hack to suit you. As this file is put on the device is a location that anyone can edit when the device is connected to a PC, putting a customised version in the package will actually make it harder for others to configure the device. But, posting your settings in a thread like this as an example for others, is a good idea. Especially if you explain why you chose those settings.

Hi my friends,

I've updated my Glo (not HD) on FW 4.2.8432 and after I've installed the last nightmode plugin that is not the usual "build 13" but this one : https://github.com/gtalusan/kobo-nig...r/KoboRoot.tgz and all is ok !

The only difference that I can see is that when I turn ON the light, the light reaches its maximum power in 3 steps whereas before it was directly in one step and immediately but perhaps it comes from the FW and not from the nightmode plugin...

PS : sorry for my very bad english but you can correct my language mistakes and give me the good version !

Now the nightmode is directly in FW 4.3.x (tested on my glo)... see it here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...85660&page=117 .

On the same page, you will see at #1742 that I've found 2 little bugs and the fact that there is no toggle to switch between daymode and nightmode at his time... it's a beta...

Kevinshort can you post some help / keys / tips into the link in order to find quickly an issue on these bugs ? we want to see quickly the come back of your fantastic and essential nightmode plugin !!!

The problems you are pointing out in that post have nothing to do with the nightmode hack being discussed in this thread. It is built into the firmware and would need to be fixed by Kobo. Asking Kevinshort to do that is not a reasonable thing to do. If you want that fixed, you need to talk to Kobo.

Hi everyone,
I'm not a developer and I was very delighted when I came across the nightmode hack a year or so ago and was able to successfully add the code to my Kobo Glo. I was quite dismayed when it updated itself to the 4.2++ version and the hack was lost.

But i came across this forum with the new code to try but somehow I'm not getting it to work (using the github/gtalusan etc link). I'm now thinking that with all the changes i've tried to make under the .kobo folder, that i've wrecked it and i can't remember what was even there before i tried these changes.

I tried to copy an image of my .kobo folders but i wasn't able to paste it in here. But this is what is there:
Folders:
certificates
etc
kepub
mnt
slideshow
dict
extra
Kobo
root

plus some nonfolder items which i'm unable to open:
BookReader.sqlite
KoboReader.sqlite
version
affiliate.conf
device.salt.conf
Trolltech.conf

My apologies for the length of this but i now suspect i have things here which don't belong. Would anybody else for whom they've been able to get the nightmode to work tell me what is in there .kobo folder? or what i need to eliminate from mine?

much thanks in advance!

I'd suggest re-downloading the KoboRoot.tgz from this link: NightMode KoboRoot.tgz just to make sure you have a clean copy.

Connect your Glo and copy this file into the .kobo directory. Safely eject your Glo and it should install this version (the updating screen and then a restart). Once your Glo is back to the home page, connect it to your computer and check to see if you have nightmode.ini in the .kobo directory. If it is present, the install should have worked. You can check the nightmode.ini file in the .kobo directory after the install and modify any options that you feel safe modifying. There will also be a nightmode.sh file present. After this, safely eject your Glo and it should let you toggle nightmode with the light switch long press.

I've pasted the default nightmode.ini file contents below just in case your old version was not overwritten though I didn't see it in your file list. The only changes I've needed to make here were for the Kobo Aura One where there is no physical light switch and the brightness settings to toggle nightmode don't work so invertActive needs to be set to yes for it to work which means you need to use your computer to toggle nightmode.

Some of the directories you listed as being in your .kobo directory such as root, etc, mnt and extra are not present on my device. The sqlite files are SQLite databases, the KoboReader.sqlite can be worked on with SQLite tools while the BookReader.sqlite is an encrypted file. The remaining files are text files and can be opened with a text editor -- I recommend Notepad++ for Windows users since it respects Linux style end of lines.

Code:
# config file for kobo-nightmode

[state]
invertActive = no		# yes / no
retainStateOverRestart = no	# yes / no

[control]
longPressDurationMS = 800       # time in milliseconds to toggle (1000 = 1 second)
debug=no			# yes/no to enable/disable debug logging

[nightmode]
refreshScreenPages = 3		#force refresh every X pages
#forceSWInvert = true #force SW invert mode (default: false)

[brightness]
1percentPatch = yes # yes / no : Nickel set brightness to 2% even when on UI it is set to 1%
				# this patch will force brightenss to 1% when:
				# - it was set to 1%, then it was set to 0% (for instance: stand-by) then changed again to "what Nickel says is 2%"
				# - it was set to 3%, then it was set to 1% then changed again to "what Nickel says is 2%"
timeout = 5 # time in seconds, after brightness is set (and maintained) to a given level, to toggle the action set to that level
# switch device off
7 = echo -ne "\xfe\x0f\xc5\x54\xff\x6a\x0d\x00\x01\x00\x74\x00\x01\x00\x00" > /dev/input/event0
# put device in standby
8 = echo -ne "\xf0\x0f\xc5\x54\x3c\xe0\x0d\x00\x01\x00\x74\x00\x01\x00\x00\x00\xf1\x0f\xc5\x54\x8e\xe3\x02\x00\x01\x00\x74\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00" > /dev/input/event0
 # when brightness is set to 11% : special action, toggle night toggleNightMode
11 = toggleNightMode
12 = enableNightMode
13 = disableNightMode
#20 = dmesg > /mnt/onboard/.kobo/dmesg_$(date +%s).log &
#30 = mv -f /mnt/onboard/.kobo/screenInv.so /root/screenInv.so >/dev/null 2>&1
#50 = hwclock -w -u
#98 = touch /mnt/onboard/.kobo/switchoff/test0.log &
#99 = /mnt/onboard/.kobo/switchoff/test.sh &
#some examples of invoking any script when brightness is set to X% for at least TIMEOUT seconds
#4 = touch /mnt/onboard/hello.world
#5 = touch /mnt/onboard/hello.world.async &
Good luck!

For me, the toggle doesn't work. I have to manually change the .ini file. I have a Glo HD on 4.2.8432 firmware. Anyone else has this?

Regards,

EDIT: Nevermind, found that on the website: As there is no power button on Glo HD need to adjust setting as described here so that a particular brightness level toggles on the night mode.

Solved

Thank you DNSB for such a meticulous reply! It was helpful to have those steps written out.

I did download again and reinstall the nightmode Kobo root file. One of the things that occurs is that there is a zipped file within that root file and when i previously installed it, I unzipped it - that was where the etc, mnt and extra folders come from.

So this time i didn't unzip that .tar folder and left as is.

The nightmode kobo root folder didn't seem to result in a separate nightmode.ini file. However, the config file that you thoughtfully included appeared in a file simply called nightmode. And both the nightmode and nightmode.sh files appeared in a subfolder called extra under the .kobo folder.

My Kobo Glo did appear to install something - e.g. it took time to reboot - but there was no change.

So I tried to systematically troubleshoot.

I turned the invertActive to yes. No change but left it as yes.

I moved the nightmode and nightmode.sh files out of the extra subfolder and into the .kobo folder on their own. No change.

i've leaned on that light button for some time thinking maybe i'm not holding it down long enough but it doesn't seem to change anything.

interestingly, when it's in a powered off state but attached by usb cable to my computer and shows a book cover, it does appear in nightmode. But as soon as I power on, that disappears even if i try to just hold the light button down.

Between each change I powered down/on. I have scanned my kobo and it doesn't appear to have any viruses.

I'm stumped. i feel like i must be close??? Is it possible to go back to an earlier firmware version if there's nothing further to be tried?

any further ideas? I am very grateful even if you're not able to help as i know how busy everybody's lives are.

The fact you know there is a tar file means you didn't install it properly. The link is to a KoboRoot.tgz file. Do not unpack it. Copy it to the device.

Hi, My Kobo Glo HD just updated to version 4.3.88966. Now I can't get night mode to work at all. I've done it a few times in past, due to updates, but this time it is just not working at all.

Are you using the correct version of the nightmode hack?

I am not sure. I couldn't see a specific version for anything over 3.something version. Am I missing an updated link? Thanks?
