As for Readers with a light and without, my Kobo Aura H2O has better contrast then my Sony Reader PRS-T1.
The T1 has no light and IR touch. The H2O has a light and IR touch. The T1 is Vizplex and the H2O is Carta. The T1 is 167DPI and the H2O is 267DPI. On the H2O, the light is not a layer. It's 5 LEDs at the under the bezel at the bottom of the screen. What can cause some loss of clarity is the use of a capacitive touch layer. Amazon took the PW3's touch layer that was against (or very near) the screen and raised it up so the bezel would be flush (for the PW4) and in doing so, lost some clarity and contrast. |

The Nook is very nice to read on. You can't control series or collections within Calibre, but that is really all I really miss. |

Funnily enough, the Nook GL3 has the best contrast and screen of the latest generation that I have seen. The thing is cranky etc, but that screen! And the orange light! Plus I put it in reverse night mode and the letters are gold on black. Yea Gods. It's the nicest screen I have ever read on, and I still read on it despite having a 7.8" Nova. It's just a joy to read on.

The better half took the 3, so I read on a Kobo Clara and a Glowlight Plus (the 6" 2015 one.) I so badly wish either of those had the quality of orange lighting the 3 has. Quote:
I like the Nook's library view. I like the larger cover size. I like the ability to sort by author and stack their books, or not. You can do the same with series, though unfortunately it only works with books from B&N (man, I wish Calibre could access the Nook's database). I like the little progress bar that shows beneath any books you are currently reading. I love the Nook's layout and formatting. The book's page numbers are at the bottpm of the screen and bringing up the slider bar will tell you how many pages are left in the chapter. That's nice. I mean, I don't know. Maybe I'm not the most demanding user. But I really do enjoy the software on the Nook. Things I would like changed:
If it is the bugginess of the software, that is Glowlight 3 specific. The Glowlight 3 and the Plus use the same software and the Plus is bug free. |

For me, home screen layouts, collections, series et al aren't very important. But the small details of the reading experience are. None of the default fonts and their sizes are satisfying for me, so I embedded DejaVu Serif Eink and changed the base font size in all my Nook books (books on the Nook, that is; I don't buy from B&N). I'm not demanding about library management (got used to nonexistent library management during my Kindle years, I guess), but I'm pretty fussy about fonts and such.

Reduced cost compared to the same device without ads, of course, not compared to a totally different competing device!

I’ve got this setting now on my PW4, but not yet on my Voyage or Oasis. I’m going to leave the WiFi setting on for a while and see if it comes through.

I just wanted to say a reset worked. We have four kindles in our house and all have the Lock Screen as the current reading book. I’m in the UK.
