The Butlerian Jihad by Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert. i've heard them get a lot of hate for "meddling" with the Dune series but i'm not seing it so far. what i'm seeing is interesting characters and scenarios. perhaps its because i'm pretty fluid, i'm not die hard about anything. yes i respect Frank Herbert but by the end of Chapterhouse i was practically crying tears of sheer boredom. I'm just about to start "Though Not Dead", #18 in the Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series. Who says that giving away books for free doesn't make money - I tried the first in the series as a freebie, got seriously hooked and spent Christmas enjoyably working my way through the rest of the series.... And then it's onto Sara Paretsky's new one "Body Work", which has just dropped from £8.99 to a rather more reasonable £4.49... If anyone has suggestions for others like these, I'd love to hear about them. Rachel |

Just looked this up, and downloaded a sample. I may have found a new series! Thanks! (As if my TBR list wasn't long enough...)

Reading T.C. Boyle's Drop City, a terrrific look at the 60s through the eyes of two sets of characters, itinerant communards in So. Cal and a husband and wife in Alaska. Both are seeking to flee conventional society. Snappy and well-written dialogue and lovely long, rhapsodic exposition.

They're great you won't be disappointed. Also he wrote a prequel last year and another prequel is coming out next month (Kill Shot) so on his site he list "American Assassin" as the first book in the series, but I'm still going to read them in the order they came out.

For my part, I have just finished The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. Quite fun and had a nice pace, but the plot was so implausible that it detracted from the immersion a little. Next up is The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo (an Xmas freebie from iTunes) about which I know very little. | |

Just finished: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill: A very quick read at 127 pages, but unfortunately it's not anywhere near as scary as the trailer for the forthcoming movie adaptation makes it seem. It follows the conventions and structure of a Victorian era horror novel. Which means it's written entirely in first-person, with long periods of descriptive or introspective narration, and a supernatural plot device (in this case a ghost) which makes very few appearances. I also saw the ending coming a mile away. Not that Victorian era horror novels are bad, but for a book written in 1983 I expected more scares. Currently reading: - 11/22/63 by Stephen King (41%) - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (37%) - A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin (31%) [on hold] - A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin (20%) [on hold] |

Term Limits is also referred to without recapping. And as you said, some characters are recurring and are introduced/defined there and that is important.

I've read the first 8 in the Rizzoli & Isle series. Very good. I'm up to the last one to be finished sometime in February. There's another due out sometime in September 2012.
