Hi,
As long as you have done what that plugin README says about adding the adeptkey.der on your netbook, all should work. If not, You should report it on the Apprentice Alf blog and someone can walk you through how to debug why it is not working. In fact, at the end of the plugin readme is info on how to get an error report that might help. Last edited by KevinH; 12-04-2010 at 01:27 PM. Reason: typo fixed |

It is certainly a small minority of Kindle ebooks. TOPAZ was common initially on technical books and perhaps on books with a small audience. You could always come across a TOPAZ in almost any genre, but recently I have noticed an uptick in new titles. On average. for me, it is now at least one in ten and a year ago my impression is that this would have been closer to one in twenty. Of the last dozen Kindle ebooks I was ready to click buy on, two were TOPAZ and one of these was published (in hardcover) in June 2010. I have a basement in my wish list for TOPAZ ebooks I would like to buy if they ever get released in another format. Obviously, your mileage may vary - particularly since we are talking about a relatively small percentage spread unevenly across the various categories of ebooks.

No. I scanned the zip file (v2.3) with Malware Bytes, Avira, and Superantispyware. Nothing found.

The malware was downloaded when I clicked the MediaFire link...it wasn't in the package itself. This is actually the third time I've gotten something - and the first two times it was vitrumode, which was nasty - from Media Fire.
This time it installed a game (or may have activated a file in a pre-loaded game?) from WildTangent named EnglishOtto. When it did it, my ZoneAlarm popped up and quaranteed it right away. But at the time it happened, I'd 1) installed the latest version of Calibre, and 2) looked into downloading the tools fire from the MediaFire link. I knew it wasn't Calibre! I have scripts disabled automatically, so I had to allow them on the MediaFire site. It initiated a download immediately - before I even had a chance to click a link to download the tools file. I knew I was in trouble as soon as it happened and ran all the programs I had (Spyware S&D, Malwarebytes, Super AntiSpyware). It looks like ZoneAlarm did it's job and caught this one (it didn't catch the two virtumode infections). |

I'm disappointed to hear this. I wonder if those tools are hosted on a safer site?

I can assure you that any malware is a result of ads on MediaFire and not the tools themselves. If anyone can suggest alternative sites to host files on -- free, no registration to download, no timed delays, no ads (which is where the malware usually comes from regardless of the site's good intentions), and sufficient anonymity for uploads -- I'm sure the developers of the tools would be all ears.

Good point DiapDealer. Fizzy? What browser are you using? FWIW, I'm using the latest version of FireFox with Adblock Plus.

Like DiapDealer I use NoScript with Firefox and didn't have any nasty surprises from MediaFire.
