The PID is no longer needed... for books purchased from Amazon, anyway.

Or if you save the original box, the S/N is on the end label.

Long thread.... lol ...
So, someone please teach me something today. Are the same python scripts and method which is used for epub DRM protected, B&N books, the same you can use in order to remove DRM protection but for AZW or MOBI, let's say Kindle protected books? I thought B&N encryption algorithm was different. |

each type has its own Plug-In in Calibre. If you choose not to use Calibre and the Plug-ins, then there are different scripting tools for each type.
So in other words - no, you can't liberate a book purchased from Barnes and Noble using the exact same tool you would use to liberate a book purchased from Kobobooks. |

Unless you're on a Mac, in which case Alf has an AppleScript application that runs the right script depending on the type of file dropped on it.

The same can be said about Calibre. Calibre has to choose the right Plug-In script to choose based on the file type but from what the USER sees they are pretty much just clicking "Add Books" and selecting a file. |

Just looking at the raw scripts, I see epub, pdf, and a key generator.
Browsing the Calibre plug-ins, I see ADE epub, B&N epub, K4PC, K4Mac, Mobi, and PDB to PMLZ (whatever that is). But I don't see pdf. |

PDB to PMLZ is for eReader (pdb) ebooks. If you don't know what they are, you obviously don't need it. No plugin for pdf's at this time. Last edited by DiapDealer; 12-09-2010 at 11:16 AM. |

Thanks. I can see where my post could be misunderstood about the K4xx plugin. Sorry about that. I didn't want to list one and have folks think it was separate. I didn't word it well. I do have v 2.3 tools.
OK. That tells me what I needed to know about pdf. I'll have to run those from the raw scripts. But it's still a moot point because I don't have my K3 yet and just had a major HD crash (2nd one this year). So I'm operating off my XP laptop and have an SSD coming in to replace that fickle HD on my main PC. |

I would like to ask a hypothetical question, if I can.
If one were to drag an AZW file (from kindle4pc's library) into Calibre with the appropriate plugin, nothing more needs to be done to remove the drm? The resulting mobi file is drm-free? If this were the case, then hypothetically further speaking, what format would folks chose to convert to make sure the format could be read in the future? Rich-text-format, epub, other? Thanks for your hypothetical answers. Last edited by FF2; 12-09-2010 at 01:38 PM. |
