Oh! Yeah, that would be important.

I haven't heard anything about DE and browsers, I'd assume that since it fills the same niche as its predecessor (namely Acrobat Reader), that some sort of plug-in would be in the offing ... but you know what they say about assuming.

As Hadrien already noted, yeah DE does currently handle PDF files, but I don't believe it currently offers a way to make PDF files reflow. If/when that gets added to the mix it'll be a very Good Thing.

Well, tagged PDF can reflow, although 99% of PDF out there are not reflowable. This has nothing to do with DE...

I'd love to see an easy way to embed epub files using Flash on a website though, just like you can embed videos from Youtube on your blog.

Adobe put out a PDF viewer for Palm some years ago that chewed up un-tagged PDFs and spat out re-flowable versions of them for displaying on Palms.

This suggests that there may be a way to re-flow even un-tagged PDFs in DE. If that's so, I think they'd be missing a really huge bet to not include that functionality in at least the mobile variant of DE, whenever that comes out. Even if the files had to be pre-processed before loading onto mobile devices, it's too obviously necessary to not do it if they can.

Sure, for text based PDF (unlike those where the text is image based), if they can somehow try to reflow the content, they should include such a feature. We've seen too many threads about people trying to reformat their A4 PDFs around here...

Are you sure about that? I create tagged, reflowable PDFs, and when I view them on DE, I can't get them to reflow... it just crops the page, or resizes to fit the width. Is there a control in the menus (such that they are) that I haven't found?

Haven't tried it in DE but it works in Acrobat Reader.

I knew that, too. However, I think it's time to nip this "reflowable" thing in the bud, until someone demonstrates it. I do not believe DE is reflowable at all... only resizeable.

If they ever port DE to smaller devices, therefore, making it reflow-capable would be very important.

The sample books in the DE library (the non-PDF ones -- such as the Sherlock Holmes version they have there) reflows nicely.

It still lack proper justification and hyphenation though... Justification can be 100% software based and in .epub files there's metadata information about the book that can identify the language and therefore hyphenate everything using a dictionnary.

The non-PDF's in the DE library are .epub, but Adobe just calls them XHTML. You would not know that this is an industry standard from Adobe's web pages.

Ah, so it does. (At least now I know why "reflow" keeps coming up!) Still surprising that they couldn't do the same with tagged PDFs, though...

Surprising, and a bit disappointing. I can only hope they have it planned for the next version, and that that version will be soon.

It might be worth asking the question about support for reflowing tagged pdfs on the Adobe DE Forum. I asked about something and got an answer within about a day from Peter Sorotkin the lead engineer on the project.
