note to self : remember to make some ice, for the next run-in with evil mosquitoes from the ninth circle of hell. also, remember never to go to scotland or the north of england in warm weather.
Luckily these little b's mostly hang out on the western coasts where it's warmer and moister. We once, in our ignorant youth, parked our car in a lay-by late afternoon to see to one of the bairns...Opening one of the doors was enough to fill the car with a swarm of the little blighters...

Now, I'll grant you that there's no love lost between me and mosquitoes, and I'm glad I don't live near any midges. And black fly season is finally over here, and none of the cats seems to have fleas at the moment.

But damn, I hate those deerflies. Especially when I'm bicycling. They don't just bite you once, they hang on and chew for a while. Then they move over and do it again. At least the bites don't itch afterward... they just bleed.

remind me to stock up on yardley's lavendar and chanel number 5 though, just in case.

(and may i say how pleased i am to learn that you wear chanel number 5. how utterly fitting.)
Well, when you come to Wisconsin to participate in the stalkers exchange program, you'll need to come in the dead of winter, then. The mosquitoes get a little stunned by the below zero (F) temps by then and are a tad less annoying.

i'll keep that in mind. of course i also will probably be stunned by sub-zero temperatures. ironically, that would probably make me significantly *more* annoying. something to keep in mind.

New rant :
what kind of sadistic b*st*rd programs a flight to leave at 6 in the damned morning ???? even leaving aside the fact that 6 o'clock is so uncivilised an hour as for the mere mention of it to be absurd, this means you have to be at the airport at 3 in the morning : even worse cruel and inhuman treatment. but that's not all : the métro only starts running at five in the morning. so in fact, the choice is : take a taxi, which between the distance and the night tarif will probably cost more than the actual flight (may as well take the taxi all the way to the end destination, at that price), or take the last métro the night before, arrive at the airport at 1 in the morning, and just wait there until 6. buckets of fun !! after all, the only thing less sinister than an airport in the daytime, is an airport in the dead of night, right ???

and while we're on the topic, WHY in the name of god would anyone want to make a stop in detroit (USA), if they are flying from Toronto (Canada) to Edmonton (wait for it... still Canada) ??? not only is it not on the trajectory, it's NOT EVEN IN THE SAME COUNTRY !!!!! gaaaah !!!

you know on second thought i think i'll just stay home, until i've saved up enough for my private jet which will fly where i want, when i want, leave at civilised hours, and take no unjustified detours. also i would like a helipad on the roof to so i don't have to take the métro to the airport, please.

The answers to those questions needs a mind of a psychologist, the brains of an intellect, the wit of a panda, the sarcasm of a Mr Bean and the tact of a Secretary-General of the UN...plus oodles of chocolate and Whisky (the reason they call it "The Water of Life")...

Oh ..... probably for the same reason that going from Austin, Texas to Monterey, California, takes me through Dallas and Los Angeles. Because the shortest distance between two points is clearly a big ol' zigzag. (And I'm not talking rolling papers here gang ... so take your tokes elsewhere ....)

and similarly, Aberdeen to Iceland involves a change at London...

Well, let's see... The PhD in the office next to me is currently out of his mind, so I could pinch that... Nearest thing to an intellect he have is Planet Head, so we can swing on over and apprporiate the brain. Need a big truck to haul it in... The wit of a panda is a very hard anatomical site, but that can be arranged, what witht he explosiion at the Padorg labs... Sarcasm of a Mr Bean hmmm... Geoffrey Bean? Got it. Hey Geoff, could you come over here for a sec? Won't hurt abit and we won't even charge you triple the going rate... Tact of a Secretary General -- Have to get back to ya on that. Might be able to substitue Patricia's tact for that one. Probably too much, but we could leave her with a bit to sapre...

Got it!

What was the question again?

I believe that lavender is, in fact, a deterrant to small annoying insects i.e. midges which is why some folks burn some on their campfires or sprinkle some essential oil about.
Or so I've been told.

Poor Zelda! I share your pain, my sister.

I remember well having to tromp through Rome in winter in the dead of night while lugging our bags because the taxi wouldn't come at that hour, to catch a train at Termini Station to go to Naples. Lots of characters fitting Geoff's terrorist description sleep in and around that station. Why can't public transportation be more accomodating of our individual plans?
