This cold is kicking my behind.

It's turned into a chest thing. When I'm up I don't notice it that much, occasionally a bit of a congested sounding cough. But I've tried pills to get things to loosen up in my chest to get rid of it and that won't work. When I lie down I start to wheeze, bubble and whistle. So I'm now using my reading pillow to sleep in a more sitting up position so I don't keep myself awake. Last night was a bit better than the night before, so at least there's that.

I also tire very easily. Yesterday I cleaned for a little bit and afterwards I had to sit down to catch my breath. I went to the shopping center a couple of times this week to get essentials (800 meters on bike and then maybe a total of 100 meters to the supermarket/drugstore and back to my back) and I needed to lay down for a while after I got home. Today's big thing will be to take the paper to the recycle bin 50 meters down the street.

Biggest question is if it's a good idea or not to visit my parents tomorrow. I think it's better to sit it out (so my sister goes on her own), but my sister thinks I should go (my mother's birthday was yesterday and my mother's medication needs to be done for the next two weeks, which is something I always do).

This sounds like pneumonia. You might need antibiotics. Have you visited a doctor?

I don't think I'll be able to get a doctor's appointment after being sick for just one week. I'll just be told to call back if it hasn't gotten any better/gotten worse after x amount of time. And I don't think it's a pneumonia; I feel too good for that.

And every day is getting a little bit better. I'm sleeping okay now, tonight I'll switch to my normal pillow. I'm coughing more, but that's because my throat's itchy because it's healing.

I think it's hitting me hard this time is because it can. In the past I've always had work and other responsibilities (especially the last couple of years) which I think prevented me from getting a properly sick from a cold. I just wouldn't let myself. Now I'm in between jobs, sure I've got my share of cooking and cleaning the apartment, but I can take all day if I need to.

But because of my coughing I'll stay at home today. My sister won't be happy about that, she'll have to refill my mother's medication.

Sheesh, you can die from pneumonia in a week, if it's one of several kinds. Walking Pneumonia (almost killed off your humble correspondent here, 30 years ago) and a few others (bacterial, etc.)

Same stuff I used to tell myself. Contracted Walking Pneumonia, kept going to work and nearly literally died. DUH.

I'll chime in here too - I am also a survivor of Walking Pneumonia - I will NEVER forget the pain every time I tried to breathe ... get thee to a doctor.

I'll also vote for getting yourself to a doctor. Decades back I went to a SF convention (IguanaCon) in Phoenix. By the time, we flew back to LA to transfer for the flight back to Canada, I felt like I was dying. I was lucky that the group I was with took charge, got me onto the plane home and then from the airport to a hospital. From what the doctors' there said, I was a lot closer to being fitted for a wooden overcoat that anyone would want to be.

I had it as a teenager. Kicked my ass. Forty years later I still have nightmares of it.

But as I said, I wouldn't be able to get an appointment at my doctor's office even if I wanted to. Mind you, if I did they would probably diagnose me with stress/anxiety and tell me that in order to feel better I should just lose weight. Mind you, if it did end up as something serious I would be asked why I didn't make an appointment sooner.

For days I've been taking things to get my lungs unclogged and nothing worked. I didn't take anything yesterday but my hot shower worked. It sounded, and felt, like something out of the Exorcist but what a relief! I'm not coughing anymore and I slept like a baby, no more wheezing and bubbling.

Essentially the more convenient and efficient version of "head over a hot bowl of water with a towel over your head", except you can sit comfortably whilst watching TV using this gizmo. The menthol crystals are extremely potent, you literally only need to add a few grains to the cup. It helped me breathe more easily and start coughing up the flubber.

I would never be able to get a doctor's appointment when I'm sick. She is always booked up for a few months, although I could leave a message and she would call me at the end of the day. Instead I go to Urgent Care mainly for a covid test. But they lost the test when I went last April with a cold. Had to go back. I was coughing a lot in the office after I tried to speak, so they examined me for pneumonia. It was a cold.
