I know I'll regret asking this, but when "you guys all say bio-waste, do you mean food scraps, as one person said, or do you mean WASTE-WASTE, as in poop? ??? I mean...it's not clear to me that we're all thinking and talking about the same thing?

Compost, to me, implies (from humans) food scraps, but out where I am, yup, animal waste (from the other end) gets composted too so...what are you good folks contemplating sitting in the freezer? (She asked, not without trepidation...)

Food scraps, mostly. Fruit peels, vegetable peels, anything that naturally degrades. Not human/animal waste, no. The cat poo goes to the general (non-recyclable) waste.

Well, crows raid anything, not just biowaste. Foxes... perhaps. I live in a city, so we don't get that many foxes here.

Food scraps, coffee grounds, pizza boxes, paper towels, plant leaves, stems, etc. (just make sure no soil is left attached and no branches over 10cm thickness). No human or animal waste. The sign above our green bin specifically mentions used diapers and menstrual products are not permitted.

One of my acquaintances is retiring from the city waste management department and last time I chatted with them, they were totally disgusted with what some people considered as recyclable or green waste.

Strictly speaking, poo IS biowaste. But yeah, for some reason they don't want it in recyclable garbage.

It takes a very special person to leave a pot of pasta and sauce on the stove until the contents are charcoal and then to throw the pot and contents into the green bin. You mean stainless steel isn't organic waste!

To me bio-waste is hazardous waste from hospitals, biology labs, pharma manufacturers etc.

I put my frozen food-scrap parcels in the same bin as any garden rubbish. The Nanny West Council refers to it as the FOGO bin (Food Organics and Garden Organics). It's the one with the Green lid.

It's called literally biowaste here.

Yes, see, I was wondering this too. Of course I've been asking these sorts of dumb questions ever since the infamous "mince" question came up, lol. Mince as in ground beef, or mince as in mincemeat for pie? (apples)? Sheesh.

So, at least is seems that everybody here is talking organic/food garbage, that is created OUTSIDE of the human waste system. Glad to hear it!

You forgot mince as a verb: to walk with affectedly dainty steps.

I actually had no idea mincemeat meant something else than ground meat before reading it here. Then I had to google it. In Estonia "mincemeat" as in pie filling et al is exactly that, "minced/ground meat".

The original mincemeat pie was a mix of ground meat, fruits and spices. It was a way of preserving the meat in an era where ice boxes and other preservation methods were uncommon. It wasn't until the late Victorian era/early 20th century, that a mincemeat pie without meat became the common form.

One comment about early mincemeat pies was that after baking, liquid fat was poured over the pie covering all openings and the pie could be kept for up to a year. Evidently people survived eating them.

Hmmm... my interest in cooking and it's history is showing.

Well, it IS interesting. While I hate cooking, I do sometimes enjoy reading about various historical ways people cooked and ate.
