Shipping Gen3 back for repair
Todays rant brought to you by the good folks at homeland security, with extraordinary help from Sony.
My Gen3 appears to have a broken backplane. curses. I got an RMA from Bookeen. more curses, but I don't think I'll get a better deal. Wish NAEB had an extended/accidental damage warrantee I could have purchased, but I've had a Rocket for more than 10 years with no damage problems. Then I packaged up my gen3 and took it to the Post Office this morning. UPS wants more than $100 to ship, USPS says an appropriate service will cost about $40. But THEN the clerk asked about batteries. As if I memorize what kind of battery the device has in it, but the mere mention of "some kind of Lithium rechargeable" draws an instant requirement to separate the battery. semi quote: "we don't ship ANY lithium batteries outside the US." Courtesy of laptop batteries that explode. If they're that worried, why do they let any of them on an airplane? So now I've come home, torn the package back apart to get at the cybook, and extracted the battery. hmm, says Lithium Polymer on the gen3 case, but the battery itself doesn't have either a manufacturer identified, or enough label to figure out what kind of battery it is without a database. Grumble. How come *I* get the post office clerks that have just been through a hazmat review? Nobody else on MobileRead has mentioned needing to take the battery out to ship an eInk device anywhere. |

testing, testing, 1 2 3... Frank, portez au juge ce vieux whisky, là au bout du couloir. a quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. fifty fife fousand four hunfred and forty four. frenology. fur. fiesta. fantom. flibbertigibbet. swiffer. affirmative. frills. fibbon. fquirrel. fa fa fa fa fa...
that's right, i caved, and bought a NEW new keyboard. (naturally, the jackass in the shop wouldn't let me return the old new keyboard : "well... you already took it out of the box... but here, i'll give you a discount on this one : 10 euros instead of 15." jackass.) (<-- token rant). it's not IDENTICAL TO my old old one, but the arrow keys are back where they belong, as are the delete / home / end keys, the backspace key is easily accessible, the Function keys are divided into groups of 4 the way god intended, and the f key seems perfectly responsive (as do all the others, so far). naturally, it is beige and not very attractive. and, ironically for someone who is tempted by Das Keyboard, this one also has helpfully labelled a few common shortcuts on the front of the keys : a little diamond "♦" on the ctrl key, and then "♦ Couper" on the front of the x key, "♦ Rech" on the front of the f key, "♦ Annuler" on the front of the z key... what do they take me for, some kind of novice ? pfff, please. so, who wants a (stylie but crappy) keyboard ? while it does technically function (if you hit it hard enough...), it certainly does not provide an optimal typing experience... actually i may not give it away, but instead give myself the satisfaction of taking it outside, flinging it with great force onto the paving stones, and then jumping up and down on it until it is no longer recognizeable as the keyboard it masqueraded as. |

Hold it in mid-air there, during your jump -- we want the photographers to get the f-stop and other such settings just right. Smile - you're on candid camera!

Yeah. You got, Yvan. It was those girls that started it with the fancy dark chocolate this and the incredible dark chocolate that. My wife goes nuts over a catalog where half a gram of some insane concoction of chocolate costs a couple or three bars of platinum. I mean, what's wrong with just a million Hersey's milk chocolate Kisses? I don't get women and chocolate.

That's what you think. I wouldn't dream of letting my partner anywhere near one of my three electric drills. (One for general perforation; one for fine work and crafts; and one used mostly as a screwdriver.). He'd only hurt himself.

For some reason in the last couple of years, chocolate has become, as it hadn't been previously, a migraine-trigger. I probably should have had the one with chilli (chilli sometimes gives relief from migraine). ~sigh~ I think I'd kill myself if icecream became a trigger. Cheers, Marc |
