it's even worse because probably half the letters are in the same place, so you really *want* to just type normally, but if you try you just get gibberish (or, as we say in azerty, "charabia"). good luck with your eee (suddenly significantly less tempted to buy one myself...).

This morning I'm going through exactly the same predicament in reverse. I was trying to answer some mail in French on the EEE.
" Ousse qu'ye s'te sacrament d'e accent aigu" only to notice that " Calisse y"en a meme pas. Pi y'a meme pas d'accent grave pi d'accent circonflexe"

Howe easily can one revert to uncivilized language when using such a simple device. Just like walking in the dark and bumping toes everywhere.

Let's have double locusts, midges, plus a rain of frogs as a side order.
I have not had a good day. The final batch of exam scripts is from students with indecipherable handwriting. It's raining (again). And my neighbours' fire alarm has been ringing for the last hour, even though they aren't on fire.

oh patricia, you and me both... rain, that demonic screaming baby (my ears hurt from wearing headphones all day), and one of the foulest, most noxious odors i have ever smelled. i don't know what the neighbors are cooking today but it's worse than fried fish. it reminds me of the time i was running through the house slamming all the windows shut and cursing the neighbors, and lighting incense on every available flat surface, and then i found out the next day that actually it had been the smell of the garbage bin that someone had set on fire in the street just in front of my building.

i feel for you. maybe you should go and set the neighbor's house on fire, then at least the noise won't have been pointless.

how many more papers do you have to decipher ? have some chocolate, to calm your nerves. did you know it's a source of magnesium ? that's very good for stress.

all right, maybe don't *really* set your neighbor's house on fire (although, it might make you feel better, and the rain would probably put it out before it did *very* much damage.) you'll have to excuse me, i'm feeling rather homicidal today. it's the fault of that evil baby and its evil parents. i was really tempted to go knock and the door and ask them pointedly "would you like me to call a doctor for you ?" and hope they would take the hint, but i didn't think i could do it in any kind of civil manner, because my nerves are so completely on edge.

I'm down to the last 60. The fire alarm has just stopped, after an hour of noise which sounded like Philip Glass on speed. The rain is still going though.

Zelda, you too have my sympathy. Noisy babies AND smells. Oh dear.

Patricia, I wish you had been one of my instructors at college. I would have included chocolate with every exam paper -- not as a bribe for a better grade as I know (and even knew then) that the best would not accept a bribe; but, to calm your jagged nerves and to give you strength when reading my chicken scratch of an excuse for handwriting.

Ha. One of the tutors whom I supervise, went on an exchange visit to the USA. As a joke he said that if people wanted an 'A' grade they should enclose a 20 dollar bill between pages two and three of their essay. (--Yes, he is an idiot.)
About a third of the essays had the money enclosed. He returned them with the bills stapled to the front page.
