They look like the different types you can get. The standard on the right. The hard in the middle (I've just had some of these delivered) and I presume the soft one on the left.

I found the hard tip pleasant to write with and I don't feel I have to push as hard when writing.

Just 2 questions:

1: I got some some strange tips for the stylus.
See photo attached. Are these ok?
Like PhilThompson said, these look legit. I've got a set of these myself.

My manual says:

Black = Felt
Orange = Hard felt
Black w/ white tip = Elastomer

I've only ever used the black, so I can't comment on which I prefer.

Not sure about the replacement battery. I hope Sony offers a replacement service, because I'm planning on using my device well into the future.

Unhappy

Received mine on Friday and *really* mixed response so far. The screen is fine, documents look good and pen seems to work well BUT the network features are a nightmare.

I set up a Web Disk through CPanel (WebDAV) on my server to coordinate files with the DPT-S1. It's WebDAV compliant AFAIK and works everywhere else, but not with the DPT-S1.

Instructions in Sony's manual are pitiful for WebDAV. I entered in all the details and nothing happened. Not even an error message to say where to look for the problem. Eventually, I removed the SSL from the WebDAV drive and it still didn't work. Then I tried just linking to a single folder within the WebDAV and for some reason it worked.

My WebDAV that worked was:
network: http://ssd10.myhost.com
port: 2077
username: username
password: password
sync folder: /Subfolder
destination folder: /

Having extra slashes or trying to access the root directory, or trying the https version or any other changes wouldn't work.

Having achieved a minor success, I then discovered that it would ONLY sync that folder and no subfolders. Furthermore, if I tried to 'send' to a destination, it would take a minute and then spit out an error message. I couldn't even send to the same subfolder it was syncing with.

Finally, I just created a Box account this morning and it appears to work fine. With WebDAV a restrictive (and archaic?) mechanism as is though, further restricting the device to Box.com seems nuts. Not really making this obvious until someone has troubleshooted the device for hours with very little feedback is a nightmare.

In the end, this thread is the best resource on how to configure the DPT-S1 out there. Sony has a 'community' forum, but 95% of the threads there are just someone asking a question from a year ago and getting no response. That really is just pitiful.

...not to mention that there are aspects of the menus on the DPT-S1 that aren't even explained once in Sony's manual: e.g. what 'Solution Server Settings' refers to in the Server Settings menu. Someone actually asked this months ago on the Sony forums, but no-one from Sony bothered to reply.

i understand the frustration. when i first tried using the network features, it was a lot of trial and error as well. but i suspect that the majority of users just want it primarily for its size and pdf handling. everything else is secondary. so they don't have high expectations for anything else. in fact, i don't even mind if there is no wi-fi at all. if there's one thing i want for this reader in addition to pdf support, it's native support for epub as well. i could leave wi-fi off for it's entire life and it would be fine for me.

Well, there is some sort of market there for the type of person who just wants to read PDFs and no distractions, but yes - it is frustrating when Sony makes the hardware and then doesn't bother actually writing software to let it undertake basic functions or even documenting how to use the software that's out there.

Looks like my weekend-long experiment with the DPT-S1 is ending. Taking it to work yesterday and it also couldn't secure a WiFi connection with an access point 10m away. DPT-S1 had some sort of WiFi Tourettes where it would disconnect, reconnect, go to standby and keep refreshing its wifi list so quickly that I could never select anything. It will just cost me the price of return shipping to Australia, hopefully.

A nice screen marred by incomplete software, poor WiFi, pitiful documentation and poor support. Reminds me of a thread on a Microsoft forum where some poor soul was trying to connect to his Office cloud via WebDAV. When told to contact Sony about the product, they replied that they couldn't actually get any response.

FYI the DPT-S1 only appears to connect to 2.4GHZ G connections. Not 5GHZ.

use calibre. just import your mobi file into the calibre library and convert to pdf. keep in mind that the mobi has to be drm-free. can't help you there except to point you to apprentice alf.

Seems to be some Sony Service thats not available outside the us.
I tried to get a WebDav running but always get the message "Cannot perform the operation. There is a problem with the security certificate of this server." when using my WebDav Server.
Box.com is working. I'm using LetsEncrypt certificates. Is that the problem? what kind of TLS certificates are you using?!

Thanks, all.

I'm returning mine anyway, so it doesn't much matter, but our WiFi is 2.4GHz and works fine with other devices. My DPT-S1 worked fine at home, but on a University campus with a WAP just 10m away through one pane of glass and nothing much else, couldn't connect most of the time. More annoyingly, the WiFi would just quickly flash between on, off and standby.

I had found that troubleshooting guide, but it too is piecemeal - it links to a PDF someone made about connecting to Box, but Sony have no details about the intricacies of connecting in general to WebDAV servers and generally it seems in most instances owners can't get it to work. Indicatively, that link mentions solution servers, but I can't actually find them mentioned as a menu item anywhere else.

If the software was more accessible or better documented, I might have bee a happy owner.

Regarding to WebDav. My findings are:
You have to use Port 443, Standard SSL/TLS.
The certificate you have to use must be above the Basic Standard. Organistion Signed or higher. (Didn't buy one but basic didn't work). The browser gives you better error messages than the Sync Tool.
I'm using Box.com because it's free and is working for me.
I will try my own server again but not now. Have to buy a TLS certificate

Unexpected Error Message

I was switching between notes i.e. in the note folder, opened a note (no other document was open) when I saw the following message box:
Title: "Sorry!"
Message: The application ContentService has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
Button: "Force close"

I am not sure what it is asking me to try again. On clicking on the button, nothing happened.

If someone has also used Ipad Pro 12.9 for readinng, can he compare his experience with reading Sony's DPT?

Try to sit outside and read with your ipad pro.
After that have a look at the Sony and you'll know why we love the Sony Dpt-S1 for reading.
Nothing compares to the Sony!
Ipad/Tablet might be fine for some little text reading or surfing but LCD displays are not your eyes friends. Reading on e-ink displays is sooooo relaxed.
