Someone in this thread has tested large (several hundreds of MBs) document. DPTS-1 works well. I suggest u double check it again.

Got mine yesterday. Wirting and working with it, feels even better then i tought.
Missing some small things, but overall a very nice device. Quote:
Another file (<100MB) is a scan of an hand writed document, but each page is (~1MB). Here it takes like 1sec to get to the next page. No big deal, but still a bit anoying. If you upload a specific file somwhere and link it here I could test it. |

not sure if anyone still cannot buy it after it's available in B&H, but just FYI, there are plenty dpt-s1 availabe on world.taobao.com, some shipping from Japan others from China, including the rooted version like this:
http://world.taobao.com/item/5226465....fSAdVY#detail PocketBook last time said they would release the CAD reader in Oct 2015, now it's Nov 2015 but no news, while Onyx just posted they are working on one too, expected to release in 2016: http://www.weibo.com/onyxinternational |

the owner of that online store is the only one in China can root dpt-s1 including the new v1.5 firmware, after root the Android version is 2.2.1 and can install those compatible apps, according to him it's software + hardware root, so the users in China need to send the reader to him.
Some discussion about rooting here: http://www.hi-pda.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=1714825 Some screenshots here: http://tieba.baidu.com/p/3360292618 |

Has anyone used this device to actually replace pen and paper? I'm a student and I'm wondering if digital notetaking is a truly viable alternative yet.
My primary concerns are the latency and durability of both the stylus tip and the screen. 1. Some people complain about the lag and say that it renders the device unusable for handwriting. Having watched numerous videos I'm still not sure if it's something that would greatly bother me, or something that I could overlook and get used to. I'm a science student so most of my notes would consist of equations and formulas. Does the latency "break the flow" too much to be productive, compared to pen and paper? 2. Any guesses on how often one would need to replace the tip, assuming 20 pagefuls of handwritten notes per week? Or is this simply not a realistic use case for this device? Thanks. |

I've been using the DPT-S1 like you're suggesting you would and I think it's good for that purpose. The latency in writing is practically negligible. The latency of page-flips, depending on the complexity (per page size) of the document is on par with what I know from e-readers in general, i.e. doesn't come close to the intuitivity of real paper but is o.k. after some getting used to. The latency of annotations and other UI-heavy interactions is such that you would not want to base your workflow on it. Overall, I find the device sufficiently responsive in single-mode operation (i.e. either writing or reading) but not a suitable replacement for parallel workflow (i.e. reading a paper and writing in an empty notebook) because the switch between different "tabs" is too slow.
The durability of the screen is good. I've been using the device extensively for half a year and haven't noticed any traces of wear on the screen (whereas the furnish of the casing slowly starts to peel off, which, however, isn't a big problem given its durable aluminium body). The durability of the pen... Well, I just lost mine to a drop on the floor, R.I.P., but if you're not as clumsy as me, you'll be happy with it. 20 pages of writing per week, I suppose you will end up replacing a nib every 2.5 to 3.5 months. Overall, I can suggest the device as a general paper-and-pen replacement, though you will have to buy multiple DPT-S1 (or resort to additional real paper) if you're doing work which requires 2 physical pages open at the same time (as described above). HTH --- I should perhaps add that I've been using a device like that (the Onyx M92 before that) for a longer time and thus already got used to the writing on the screen. It may not be precisely true that the latency is negligible in all cases! For example, for "scratch" work, shuffling formulas, trying out different things I still have to use actual paper! Only for writing things in clear I feel comfortable using the DPT-S1, in which case I really thing the latency is not a hindrance. FWIW, I think, if you have the possibility, you could perhaps try out the device in real life at a store (or order it and return it if you're unhappy with it) because I'm afraid my (and everyone else's) opinion concerning what's okay and what's not is always biased ![]() Last edited by ManDay; 11-13-2015 at 09:58 AM. |

Thank you for the concise response, ManDay. This helps me come to a decision.
It is not possible for me to get a hands-on with the device as I also reside in Europe, so I would just have to take the plunge. I may end up ordering one, though I'm not yet sure whether to go for the English or Japanese unit. It looks like there is some functionality in Japanese firmware 1.4 that I think would be great (cut/copy/paste/move handwritten notes). That was released in March '15, which doesn't boost my confidence in Sony's support for the English version... |

If you're fluent in Japanese, the JP model seems like the better option. To my knowledge, is it not only more functional, but also considerably cheaper.

Wavy screen on dpt s1
Firstly hello to everybody as this will be my first post,
I have just bought Sony dpt-s1 and so far its wonderful, yet i would like to ask a question about its screen. It is not a smooth planar surface, it is noticibly wavy. I am not sure its common to all screens with built in digitizers but I am just curious about returning it for RMA. Could you also check yours if it is similar or not. Thanks in advance My best |

i would say that mine is not wavy at all, neither tactile nor visual. could extreme heat cause it to warp?

Might be due to heat yet it came out of the box like that. For the tactile side, I can also feel the wavyness when I touch the screen. I guess its a quality issue

I have the same issue with my Sony Dtp-S1 and I was sad when I saw it because it had cost me nearly 1400 Euro(!) to import it with all accessories.
This is surprising as the device is made in Japan and I thought my beloved Sony knows enough about quality. Now I'm just living with it as I have no chance of warranty here in Germany and I've already laser engraved my device. Even if there are things that could be better the DPT-S1 is the device I wanted for years! The only machine that could top it will be the Microsoft Surface Book. |

Since the DPT-S1's screen is plastics, as opposed to other readers, and of very thin build, I'm not surprised that it's not perfectly flat. Mine isn't either. I don't see how this is a problem, though. Maybe it's more serious for you but for me it's hardly noticable. Any real paper book would be more wavy.
