Well, the $799 price and the fact it's now back in stock broke me and I order my Sony Digital Paper!
My goal is to use it mainly for my tabletop RPG hobby--I own a lot of gaming PDFs and I want to use them better at the table. I will say again that i do not like tablets or tablet displays for serious reading, so the SDP is hopefully the answer to my electronic game book reading issues. We shall see! |

I'm so jealous about you lucky US guys! :-) The rest of the world can't buy that beautiful machine because Sony is simply dumb!

I guess the issue only remains with their customer support and description. According to that, only a 100% verification will raise that limit. Don't forget about the 12% fee that they and the bank charges, though. That, and ship, it's not 799 as you claim. It's about 906 USD, and only if you ship to Oregon or whatever their warehouse is. Other forwarders also charge less than 12%, fwiw.

Anyway i just wanted to highlight a shipper that i have found to be 100% reliable for those wishing to obtain a dpt-s1 outside the usa at a cost...
Really enjoying mine just wish they would hurry up with firmware 1.4 English. |

Yeah, it has some nice features. I'm esp. looking forward to the thick pen. Nothing urgent, though. It would be nice to have a way to insert pages in a PDF document like one can insert pages in the notes to write longer annotations.

Has anyone had any trouble with 'holes' in the response of the touchscreen to pen input?
For a couple of weeks now I have small coin sized holes in the response to pen input on my unit. They are also moving around a bit day to day and some days all is ok. It's like the unit is seeing gaps in its IR sensors. It's very annoying as I'm having to leave big holes in pages of notes when and if a section of the page won't respond to the pen. Any help much appreciated. I'm in Ireland, so not easy to get support. |

Hi, try a complete factory reset of the device (of the kind that you would do it if you lost your encryption key). I think it is a software issue, because the Stylus does not use IR for sure and I think the touchscreen is capacitive, too. Also, they most likely run on completely different controllers so it's unlikely that both exhibited the exact same "deadzones" as you describe it. Good luck.

Guys, I am looking to buy one and now looking for your suggestions. I intend to use it mostly for 2-3 hours reading every day and only very limited occasional writing. Does anybody here has any idea on the life span of this device, I mean if I invest this much of money I will be expecting it to last at least 10 years or so. Also how long the nib lasts, is it a big ongoing cost? I live in Australia and shipping of these nibs or even a service will cost me lot in shipping. Is this devices is rugged in nature for daily use indoors and outdoors. Can I trust it to go for a long time without any need of repair?

I suggest waiting for the competitors to release their counterparts and then make a decision. As I see it, the DPT-S1 is a first of its kind, niche device targeting a market that's willing to spend an absurd amount of money for something without much functionality. In the near future, I think you will see better options with respect to both price and functionality (i.e. supporting Android and its marketplace rather than trying to reinvent the wheel). Technically, it's just an e-reader with a larger screen. The hardware consist of the usual components, SoC, WiFi, batttery, USB port. It may be unique, but it's not some exotic prototype. Besides, it seems to be a superb build quality. So I'd expect about the same life-span as any other e-reader, perhaps even a bit better, given that it has an uncrackable glass screen and is well manufactured. As usual, the components which are most likely to wear out first are the battery, ports, and buttons. The nibs really shouldn't be a a problem. The supplied ones should, if you hardly write on it, easily last 10 years. I'Ve used Wacoms for years and those nibs last forever. The device is very thin, but I wouldn't necessarily call it fragile. However, for the purpose of putting it into my bag to carry it around I've bought a thicker sleeve (any 13.3" sleeve should do just fine). Rugged, it is certainly not and should be used with great care outside. The case appears to be some plastic, rubber, alumiunium blend, not sure what kind of material they used - but it's not scratch nor shock proof. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Ok, got my SDP and I am very happy with it's performance overall--it's great for reading RPG books so long as the PDFs are "flattened" and not too image rich. Anyway, I need something to carry it in when I stick in my shoulder bag. Something hard-shell plastic or aluminum. Any ideas?
