Sorry, confused here. Figured out the K3 with help (thanks!) and now thought I would tackle the paperwhite 2.
Last time I did the jailbreak in 2014, I used the 1.14N at the beginning of this thread and then I updated to 5.4.5.1 I installed Kual at that time and I have one extensions folder with a bunch of subfolders inside it (BBB, Koreader, MRinstaller etc). I have also a folder for mrpackages and a folder for python (among others). My questions are: 1. What is the key value of updating the firmware past 5.4.5.1 to 5.7x and what is the key drawback(s)? 2. If I decide to update the firmware, do I need to update the jailbreak first to the latest one in this thread (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=225030) or can I just update the file called "bridge" to the root of device from here (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=1597) and then update to 5.7x? Or some other process? 3. I'm unclear also on how to update all the Kual extensions. Do I just replace each subfolder in the extensions file with the updated extension? Or do I get rid of the entire extensions folder and just put all those updates at the root of the kindle and they will each create an individual extensions folder? Or they will find the extensions folder and deposit their subfolder inside of it? |

I am confused as bluen up there I guess.
After not doing anything with my PW2 besides reading what was already on it, I found out this week, that I am now unable to access the store directly from my kindle. Suspecting that it must have something todo with my JB and locked 5.4.0 firmware version I went back to this forum to read about the changes in the amazon store. Since then I am trying to figure out: a) if there is really a "safe" (as in I dont get more updates if I dont want to) firmware version beyond 5.4.0 b) if a) is true, which version is at least needed to be able to access the store again AND keep the backdoor lock still working c) have at least a basic working calibre/collectionsmanager/librarian funtional c) is where I get stuck, as I am unable to understand the limitations beyond 5.4.0 clearly enough. What I figured is, that I will lose the ability to nest collections inside collections (which I never used so far anyway). What I can not extract out of all the posts is, if I can still be able to create collections and put books in them in general out from the calibre file the plugin puts on the pw2. Just basic stuff I want. - rename books while transfering (calbri does that, so I figure this will always work) - create collections out of the calibre file - move books accordingly into the collections and out of the home sight From my understanding the first will always work, but I dont understand if the last two will always work as well as long as I have a JB device where I can run stuff like librarian, or if amazon messed the firmware up beyond "repair" for programs like collectionsmanager and librarian. so if anyone outside would be so kind in to help me get that knot in my brain sorted, I would be very glad! :-) |

a) None, unless you have our jailbreak in-place
None, even with the jb in-place, unless you use one of our blocking tools b) Under investigation. c) you lose the ability to nest collections, you gain the ability to use cloud collections. Yes, if jailbroken and using LibrarianSync. Plus, there are alternatives to Calibre when using LibrarianSync. Possibly the easiest to use is LibrarianSync's ability to build the collections database from the file tree structure. (KOreader already uses the file tree structure - to a Kindle, the world is flat (the file tree got run over by Lab126's fork lift) - but LS can fix that. ![]() d) LibrarianSync Note: Your device must be registered to use collections. Translation: Stay with your 5.4.0 and use something other than your Kindle to contact Amazon with - at least until we sort out a more elegant solution. There are a lot of users with the same requirements as yourself right now. Being locked out of the newest Kindles for better than a year lost us a lot of contributors. Now that we have access to the newest generation devices, we are picking up contributors again. Last edited by knc1; 03-06-2016 at 07:58 AM. |

Thanks for the fast answer!
I bought some books in the meantime with my pc and the books still get downloaded directly to my pw2 with 5.4.0 without problems. So this seems to still work anyway. So I will stay put and watch the forums for a bit more. Awesome job you guys are all doing! Thanks for that!!! |

b) Firmware version 5.6.5 and a specially named directory at the top of visible USB storage, see:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...&postcount=269 and the test report in the prior post (268). |

My kpw2 was JailBreak before, I updated it to 5.7.3 and reseted. Today when I used the last JailBreak-1.14.N-FW-5.x-hotfix for FW 5.7.3, it showed "UPDATE ERROR 007".

The update replaced Amazon's part of the system image - That process **should** have ended with a restart, which would have included the "Bridging ..." message - Then you did a "Factory Reset". Which would have cleared the user's part of the system image - including the things that make the jailbreak survive. Translation: Your 5.7.3 image **should** be jailbroken. All you did was trash out the safety net that would protect it from the next update. If IIRC above, then my question now is: What makes you think your main image is not still jailbroken? Are there some things you are not telling us? It most likely is and what you need to do is re-install the "bridge" package. Last edited by knc1; 03-14-2016 at 10:13 PM. |
