Mysterious problem with dictionary-lookup - Page 2

I've just checked, and Mobi Creator insists that you select a "valid" language ID from its list. So far (touch wood) I've had no problems with the books I've created, in which I set the language to "en-us" and "en-gb", depending on whether they're American or British English; dictionary lookup (with Chambers' dictionary) works fine with both settings.

While we are with this, would you mind adding Spanish? As far as I could see, the code is "es" => 0x000a, without considering all the variants.

Aha, what happens is that the language is set to the value of "" since "" is not in the language map. And this might result in 0 but if you want 0 you should use "--language 0".

The Mobi2mobi GUI wanted a language too.

Note, there weren't any problems with "English" language dictionaries (be they Chambers or the GCID) on the Iliad - they work with any English language text (en, en-au, en-us, en-gb). It was only a French-English (fr <--> en) thrown into the mix that gave rise to the problem. I had wondered if simply changing it to the same as the Chambers (en <--> en ) would have helped (but I didn't know how to do that...what Tommy says above would probably have helped me there, as I could look at the code for the Chambers and copy it to the French-English), but, then, if I ever get around to learning to read French texts via the saturation method, the lookup might not work on French texts then.

Personally I'd prefer it if the Iliad's Mobipocket Reader was updated to do as the desktop Mobipocket Reader does, and just ignore the whole language field for dictionary lookup, but, hey, what are you gonna do?

Mobi2mobi works for me now.

I run up against the same problem, so I mailed booken give an account of it.
This is what I wrote to them:

I was trying to read an Italian book which had some paragraphs in French, so I created a French->Italian dictionary with Mobipocket creator. It worked well enough on the Mobipocket Desktop Reader, but it didn't on the CyBook.

After several attempts I found out that the CyBook, being the book I was reading setted as to be in Italian, was looking for a dictionary which had Italian as input language, couldn't find any, and reported no results.
I tried to rebuild the dictionary as an Italian monolingual one, and it worked, so I could at last lookup French words on the CyBook. This is very annoying because it is a limitation that isn't present on the desktop reader. In the case I introduced, the Desktop Rader accorded priority to an Italian->Italian dictionary, but it looked up in other dictionaries too, in every dictionary in fact, and I could see the other results by clicking on the "More results.." link.

It is a very uncomfortable restriction, because it forces me to make several copies of the same dictionary with "fake" input languages, but, while I can do this with custom dictionaries, I can't with purchased ones.
I purchased the Chambers Pocket English Dictionary, and I can't use it but on English books; I can't look up English words if they are in, say, an Italian book, or a French one.

Is it a bug of the version of the reader implemented on the CyBook? Can you do something to fix it?

Of course, I haven't thought of changing the language of the book to "neutral" with mobiperl...

Is there a way to know in which language a mobi book is? Same thing for a dictionary?
I use linux and mobi2mobi allows me to _set_ the language but not to see it, and mobils just lists the tilte and author, AFAIK. Calibre doesn't seem to list language in its metadata either.

I just installed a French dictionary in addition to my English one, and I'd like to inspect how dictionary lookup works with respect to language.

Just run mobi2mobi on the file and it should print the language. I just tested it and it said:

That does, the trick, thanks!

My French books were declared with english language, which explains why the lookup in a French dictionary didn't work. By fooling around with mobi2mobi I set my books to neutral. If I'm not too lazy I'll try to set them to French (since the book I'm reading is _long_ hopefully I'll find the strength to do this before I finish it

Now I wonder if it's possible to set the dictionary language to neutral, maybe that would be simpler than changing the books...
