Uh, I may have missed this scanning through the thread, but has anyone used the word "backup" yet? There are lots of automatic backup systems floating around and a few on-line backup sites. If you're like OP, I'd strongly suggest getting one or two of them and READING THE USER MANUAL so you get all your 'stuff' backed up constantly.
Another suggestion for OP, print out your filenames in alphabetical order, cut them into single strips, tape the strips to index cards, put index cards into box. Maintain manually. |

Oh, good, the developer's here! I've always meant to ask:
If I create a folder, name it Self, fill it with books I've read and designate it as my Calibre library, then create an empty folder, name it New Self, designate it as my new library and tell Calibre to delete the old one, will I become a fresher and less cynical person as a result? Will I acquire the ability of children to learn new languages quickly? Will I be able to do the watusi without stuttering once more? I really hope the answer's yes, since I've been following a regimen of electroshock therapy five times a day ever since Calibre was first introduced. If it doesn't work, then I expect a full apology from the developer for seducing me with free software and free tech support. Users beware! Oh, good, the developer's here! I've always meant to ask: . . . |

Thanks for your suggestion!
In fact, I was thinking of posting a query right now. I only stopped because, lately, I seem to be repeating myself due to the electroshock's obliteration of my short-term memory. Small price to pay for being well-adjusted -- that's what I say. Small price to pay for being well-adjusted -- that's what I say. Oh, good, the developer's here! I've always meant to ask: . . . |

Very entertaining thread for a boring afternoon here
![]() But honestly, using your desktop to store a library? to store anything you don't want to lose? That's just begging for a disaster to happen. Calibre is a super program. It didn't need the extra confirmations that Kovid did to try to appease the OP, yet he did it anyway. The manner it deleted the library was exactly the same manner every other program will delete its files... they never move them to the recycle bin, the program deletes the files. I just had a problem a few weeks ago where trying to switch profiles in Thunderbird ended up with it deleting not what I intended. It was entirely my own fault for not simply taking 2 minutes to put a full copy of the emails at least elsewhere before I started tampering with profiles. But yes, it deleted the entire profile, files were not in the recycle bin at all, as any program will do. Instead of yelling at Mozilla, I ran a data recovery program and got most of the old information back. There were some emails I really didn't want to lose from the last several months that I needed. It took a little time, but most everything was restored. Again, it was clearly my fault in just doing something hastily (and stupidly) without thinking. As it was clearly the OP's fault here as well. Bashing the program isn't going to get your files back. Start looking into data recovery, there's some good free programs out there. Just do not install the program to the drive you want to recover data from, do not even save any documents to that drive, leave it untouched, and you should be able to recover virtually all of your files. Thank you, Kovid, for an outstanding program that I couldn't live without at this point, and all the constant improvements you keep making to it. |

Sounded like a good idea so I tried it, but I must've done something wrong. The spine came away from the book and all the pages fell out. Any suggestions? (or is this the lossy part?)
