Embedded font?

Can someone please explain to me the concept of embedded fonts? You're saying you can embed a font in an epub/mobi and the font will show on the device even thought it's not installed on it? How is that possible? Have I misunderstood?

Yes. That is what happens with PDF files too, you can embed fonts into them.

As for as eInk book files go, you can embed fonts into ePubs and into the KF8 Kindle format, but not into the older mobi7 Kindle format.

When you embed a font into a book and then put the book onto the reader, the font is on the reader as well; it's literally inside the book. Your reader does need to have a function to use the embedded font. Some readers just call it "Use Embedded Font" or something, the Kindle calls it "Publisher Font".

If your file is an EPUB or an AZW3/KF8 (same thing), then you need to convert in Calibre to embed the font; so, you can end up converting from EPUB to EPUB or from AZW3 to AZW3.

If your input and output format are the same, I would advise to keep the original outside of Calibre as a backup. Calibre keeps a backup called "original_epub" or "original_azw3", but it's easy to lose that.

My eyes are just weird and with 10 hours a day staring at a PC screen at work and numerous medications, I never know whether Amasis from yesterday looks too much today and I need to go at bit "less bold" to prevent my eyes from watering or if my eyes are watering because I am squinting at a font that is not bold enough... The modified Charis SIL is actually a very nice in-between font, not too bold and not too faint, Deja vu Serif E-ink, from one of the other forum members is also very nice. I also like Malabar, Miller Text and Linux Libertine but it's kind of like with shoes: if you are on your feet all day, it's nice being able to change shoes after a few hours - but maybe that's just me.

Yeah I'm the same way. Sometimes the same font looks too bold and other times too faint. Depends on how my eyes are at the moment. Which is why I wish amazon would add a font weight on the fly adjustment liked kobo has.

hummm... but I did embed today my font in a mobi to mobi conversion and it worked perfegtly well. As a matter of fact, it worked for every mobi I worked on today, 6 or 7....

I am emailing those books to my kindle account, so it is my understanding that they need to be mobi as amazon will not accept mailed ebooks in azw3. I embed the font (trebuchet) and email them to my account so that I can use whispersync and it works fine, font-wise and whispersync-wise.

I could be wrong, but I thought true mobi7 files were unable to support embedded fonts. I haven't got a clue as to what calibre creates when it converts to a file with a mobi extension. I know the Kindle Previewer creates a file with a mobi extension, but the file actually contains both mobi7 and KF8 versions, at least that is my understanding. When I use the Send To Kindle app on my computer, Amazon decides which version (mobi7 or KF8) to send to the device. At least that is how I think it works.

Send to kindle fails for me, but calibre send to email does the job. And yes, I convert through calibre.

Curious...are you converting to 'old' or 'both' in Calibre?

In what way does Send to Kindle fail for you? Is this a new issue?

I cannot remember in which thread I read this, but I recently read that Send To Kindle fails on some Windows PCs due to an outdated registry or something. They gave instructions on how to fix the issue. I use a Mac so it works fine, for now any way.

Mobi/AZW does not support embedded fonts. AZW3/KF8 and ePub do support embedded fonts. But unlike ADE with ePub, on a Kindle, you have to go to the Aa menu and toggle to use the publisher font.
