Since I just got my PW2 I'm trying this out but having some difficulty.

Here's what I've done:
  • I've taken a book that's in Calibre (1.5) that only has an epub format.
  • I opened the file in Sigil and it has nothing in the fonts directory so I assume that means there are currently no embedded fonts in the epub.
  • I highlight the book in Calibre and choose convert. I change the output to AZW3.
  • I choose Look & Feel and click 'Embed font family:". I choose a very distinctive font.
  • I hit OK and wait for the conversion job to complete.
  • I plug in my PW2 and when it appears in Calibre I right-click my book and choose 'Send specific format' and make sure it's the AZW3 I'm sending.
  • eject and unplug and look at the book on the Kindle

What I'm finding is that the book looks the same as the others and I can't see any option to use 'Publisher font'. Does this appear when you hit the font button (aA) or is it under the settings somewhere? I can only see an option to do with page refresh under reading settings.

Thanks

It seems you're doing everything correctly...

The option should be under the Aa button, where you also set the font sizes.

Strange that it does not appear. Does the book have any reference to "font-family" in the CSS? If it has, it could be that the Kindle "decides" to use that font (if the Kindle has it) and omit the publisher font option.

I think it's a Calibre issue. I tried again starting with a plain text file and that embedded the font and I got to see the Publisher's font option on the Kindle.

If I do a tweak book and explode the azw3 from the original conversion there's nothing in the fonts directory. I'll check on the Calibre forum for any known issues with font embedding.

Cheers

No but it does have references to font-weight and font-style.

That shouldn't matter as far as I know. That's just to specify how fonts look (normal, bold, italic...), not which fonts are used.

Thanks Katsunami for the fonts. I installed the font into Calibre and configured the device inputs to send AZW3 first. After converting and replacing the publishers font with yours, it shows up perfectly on my PW2 with the option to use publishers font. So I think I will use that font with all my new books from now on giving me the option of using it or not.

@Hal: Enjoy them

It's a pity that one can't embed two or three fonts and then get "Publisher Font 1", "Publisher Font 2" and so forth as options.

Ah well. I've settled on "my" version DejaVu Serif some time ago, and my entire library is EPUB-based. I only convert to AZW3 to use on the Kindle, so it works perfectly to just embed DejaVu Serif E-Ink into the AZW3.

Thanks GoSharks I found it! I reworked the order so the formats are in the order I want them to be - I love Calibre!

Unfortunately, font embedding appreciably bloats a book size. Say, one keeps two hundred books on PW averaging 2.0 MB each and embedded font is 0.5 MB. So, initial 400 MB will become 500. Add multiple dictionaries 50-60 MB each... strong argument to hold on PW1... until Amazon closes that loophole with FW update :-(

As I normally don't have my entire library on my reader (it doesn't even fit the KPW anymore), I don't really care about the size of the books, as long as it's not idiotic, like having a cover image of 5 MB. (Yes, I did encounter that once in a bought book.)

Still, it's a good thing to know. I would rather have the books I want with the fonts I want, so I will just make sure I don't overload the Kindle.

DejaVuEInk looks promising. Will you post your version of Verdana?

Katsunami probably can't do that since Verdana unlike DejaVu is not a freeware font.

I also wanted to say thanks for the DejaVuEInk font. I typically prefer a sans font but I think that I can get along just fine with this one at least on some of my books.

Indeed, this is the case. I can't post Verdana, as it is not a free font like DejaVu.

Verdana and Georgia are provided with most, if not all current operating systems, as they are Core Fonts for the Web, so you probably already have the original versions. You could install the free and open-source program FontForge and create your own modifications.

I'm having some difficulty as well--hope someone can give me some clues...I'm following all the steps exactly as latepaul outlined above, but getting a different result. After doing this, I do see an option for "Publisher Font" when choosing the Font (aA) button, but when I choose that, it defaults to Helvetica instead of the font I embedded in the Calibre conversion. Am I missing a simple step? Thanks for any pointers!!
