What's the difference between launching via kfmon vs with nickle menu alone?

Hopefully, none. It's just that I only have so much time to try stuff out, so, it's more of a question of support (as in, if you ask a launch-related question, my first answer is going to be: "try going through KFMon", as that's the setup I actually test).

I've not used NickleMenu to launch KOReader, but I have been using KFMon and it works for me.

For me, the only difference is that KOReader and Plato have their entries in NickelMenu's menu while I have to locate the files to launch either of them using KFMon so I find NickelMenu more convenient.

I’m hoping to load KO Reader onto my Kobo Aura one, firmware 4.31.

Following the instructions 1-3 at the beginning of this thread, I’m assuming the ‘root’ directory is what shows up when my Kobo is attached to my PC, with a long list of folders and sub directories, and that I simply unzip the downloaded file there.

What I don’t understand is what I do to get around the problem outlined in instruction 4. Clicking on the link takes me to a page of text or code but there’s no explanation I can see for what to do with it.

Am I missing something obvious?

I don't think the instructions here are necessarily as clear as they could be, but tl;dr check the second post in the thread.

Thanks. Unfortunately, my laptop is running Windows 8 and doesn’t seem to have PowerShell at all, let alone PowerShell 5.

Probably too late now but I'd suggest updating Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 (see Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 for instructions. After that, you can install Windows Management Framework 5.1 which will bring Powershell up to version 5.

I wasn’t aware of this, so thanks for providing the links. My laptop is pretty worn out, but I’ll definitely give the update a go.

A better solution is to update to Windows 10.
