LCP is not a hardware feature. Right now, from the top of my head, Pocketbook and Tolino devices support this DRM scheme. Both of them didn't come with support out of the box, it was patched in with firmware updates. If the demand is there, manufacturers will implement it.

Almost but not quite.
The libraries are not exactly a direct customer. They are the customers of service providers who insist on including this "feature" in their products. I don't think librarians see it as an added value - at least this librarian doesn't.

It's already proven not to be unbreakable otherwise Readium would not be taking to the legal route.

It's not possible to put the genie back into the bottle! The code is out there and is not going to vanish. But it's no longer easily obtainable by everyone with a single click of the mouse. The situation will be more in keeping with what usually happens with software of this type. Those who want to be able to de-drm LCP will need to search for what they want and perhaps have a little knowledge. It is no longer trivial. Most won't bother and it will be beyond many. Right now an appropriate Google amongst other methods reveals many possibilities.

To me LCP is no big deal. I remain unaffected. I don't like DRM. I don't want to see an additional widespeard system including LCP. On the other hand, I find it hard to get too perturbed about a system which is overwhelmingly used to protect library books, at least so far.

Risk is a big factor that will stop many from proceeding. The DeDRM tools are well examined and known to be safe to use. A Google search might easily lead to malware.

That's not how it works. Burrying this one instance of a tool does not remove any other instances of it from the Universe. Nor does it prevent anyone from reimplementing the tool, although the aggressive takedown does serve as warning to anyone who might reimplement to do so quietly.

Thanks for pointing this out. One should always be aware of the risks inherent in running software from untrusted sources. Even copies of the tools can carry malware.

The good news is that it seems noDRM has been able to have the repository reinstated with the offending parts removed.

I'm familiar with only the concept of Git (used it for some code I modified). Wasn't the tree manager.

Is there a "download just the executable" right now, or do I have to request the whole source code tree? I just want to run the non-LCP code and don't care about what's inside it.
