Same is true of Adobe’s stake in the ebook business. It was never very much, but it’s more of a rounding error now.

NoDRM's GitHub is back up

It still seems to have LCP, but I'm guessing he's being given time to remove it.

I wonder if noDRM even knows the repository is back up as yet? Very strange approach by Github. Even those who had cloned the github or downloaded zips at some stage would do well to take a look. There are numerous commits in the last 14 days including a commit to make the tools work in QT6. Readium support does seem to remain though I doubt it will last long. For me and most of us outside of parts of Europe this is not particularly relevant. The only way I can see myself encountering LCP protected books is on a rare occasion if it is adopted by the Internet Archive as planned. Which of course lends books rather than sells them in any event.

I shall be delighted if noDRM manages to get a cleaned up repository back up.

noDRM has been busy. From Issue #18: LCP DRM removal information

Quote:
  • The LCP DRM removal code is no longer available in this GitHub repository
    ...
  • The lcpdedrm.py file in this repository has been replaced with one that just prints an error message upon encountering an LCP-protected book.
  • The release ZIP files for v10.0.0, v10.0.1 and v10.0.2 have been replaced with updated ones that also contain this modified lcpdedrm.py file.

GitHub and Readium are now reviewing this repository again to see if they are happy with the current state - I don't expect there to be any issues, as I've implemented all the changes they suggested, so I hope that this repository will now stay available.

More people were inevitably able to fork the repo between the time it came back online, and the time the LCP abilities were removed. I wonder how aggressively Readium will pursue those?

I think it's stupid to fork it on GitHub, just upload it somewhere else like GitLab or Sourceforge.

When NoDRM's repository was taken down, I had a look at other repositories based on his and they were also taken down. So if anyone forked with the Readium code, it will be eventually taken down.

If you look at the University of Chicago ebook downloads, they offer LCP and ADEPT DRMmed variants.

Thanks David. I've been having a look for LCP in Australia and though there are some partners I haven't yet come across a public library or bookstore using LCP here. It will be interesting to see how far this DRM spreads. I wonder if it is significantly cheaper than Adobe?

According to this, LCP is cheaper but it doesn't really tell us actual prices:

But the real issue is that LCP is not supported well enough. There's a lot more support for Adept.

But why does it matter? It's always better to be able to choose from multiple vendors, so that they (e.g. libraries) can easily choose the cheaper or more easy to implement DRM solution. If LCP would completely replace Adobe DRM, Readium could implement any pricing scheme they want.
