If you change the URL and update, assuming the more chapters check passes, you will be overwriting the text with the version from AO3 because none of the chapter URLs will match.

As for what happens to cover, it depends on your settings. You can try it and see, or use 'Add New' mode, or use a temp library...

I've been thinking of just swapping them over entirely and then manually re-pasting the cover image if it overwrites. (The alternative would be to make individual URL sections and that breaks some of my other metadata changes.)

Of course that leaves all the fanfics that aren't crossposted to AO3. It's been the better part of a week and at this point I'm wondering if FictionPress just abandoned the site entirely.

I'm not sure how much use this would be in general, but when populating a new metadata column from the saved columns I check "new only" on all the other columns to avoid overwriting anything I'd manually modified.

Would adding a select/deselect all button for "new only" to the preferences window be worth the effort?

I guess "populate this specific column from saved metadata" would also work, but that seems more effort and select/deselect all might have other uses as well (though I'm not sure what).

Also: how does a chapter count column work with anthologies? Also, aside from updating all (and undoing all the manual edits I made to the TOCs) is there a way to add it to existing anthologies?

I don't think toggle-all buttons for the 'New Only' checkboxes are worthwhile. But I will think it if other users step forward in favor of the idea.

I have vague recollections of a plugin that could 'lock' or write-protect columns to prevent changes, but I can't find it now.

numChapters and numWords are summed for anthology books. No, there isn't another way to use FFF to fill a chapter count column for anthologies.

Once you start modifying FFF's epubs, you are mostly on your own. To preserve modified anthology epubs, my best idea is to save the modified epubs off in another library or outside calibre first, then copy them back. There should be a way to make that work, but you'd need to experiment.

Job Spy can hide-lock columns. I once tried to use it to hide the #fanficmetadata (I didn't know about the locking thing at that point) but FFF got angry and threw an error.

The 8 FFN stories I had update notices for worked in the web site and for downloading just now. Maybe it's fixed?

Literally an hour after I pm'd a handful of my favourite authors offering them AO3 invites in case they wanted to crosspost.

wuxiaworld.site doesn't seem to work for downloads any more. Getting: HTTP Error 503: Service Temporarily Unavailable for every story.

I'm not seeing that.

You are probably seeing either a true site slow down or the site deliberately throttling you.

In what instances would running an "Update Metadata from Column" change the timestamp of the ePub itself? Power Search and Agent Ransack both decided to re-index a good chunk of the files I updated with #chaptercount last night. (I'm fixing the timestamps before I run my backup job...)

I checked the ePub itself in 7zFM and the files that had changed are content.opf, cover.jpg, mimetype, and the title page. The "Packaged" date on the title page didn't change.

EDIT: Could "Update ePub Cover" do it even if the cover hadn't changed?

I am not aware of any circumstances under which FFF itself will change the epub when doing 'Update Calibre Metadata'. The Count Pages plugin can still be called. I doubt it changes epub either, but I don't know that.

You know, you will actually get faster answers to some of your questions with a simple "try it and see" approach.

Odd, I wasn't able to replicate the results on a test fanfic. I also dug into my backup for one of the modified ePubs and comparing the title page and OPF files shows no actual content changes, just the timestamp modification.
