Okay - tried turning off the splash screen. Now, I get just the Calibre app name in the menu bar and a spinning beach ball of death. I got rid of that GUI.lock file again and tried again. Now, just a menu name - a spinning beach ball - and when I try to force quit, it automatically respawns. Won't stay quit. Gonna have to restart the computer...
Then, I'll delete the GUI.lock file again, and await any other ideas, if you have any. Thanks... |

Can you please clarify what I might uninstall to completely remove the app without affecting the old version? I don't want to lose the ability to manage my library with 1.48, but would really like to uninstall/reinstall completely, the new version to see if I can affect a fix. I think it's a great app, and would like to use it to the best ability.
Did those debug notes not give you anything? |

Just removing calibre.app is enough to completely purge the installation.
It will leave behind your configuration settings and your library. Simply redownload and replace calibre.app |

Dang! I tried that, and it didn't do a thing. Thought I might delete the configuration and preferences too - and any extraneous files. Would prefer to keep my library, but am unsure - does it use the same library as 1.48? 'Cause if it's a different library, the new version is empty and would have to be rebuilt anyway ('cause I haven't been able to use it). I'd kinda hate to lose my old library - but perhaps I can just find where it's stored and back that up - clear the whole system of everything from the new version - and insert that back.
I'm at a loss. I was teaching a "Making Ebooks with InDesign" class today, and always recommend Calibre - but was only able to show the old version to the students (I teach online, so use my own machine). I suggested they try it, and hoped they'd have a good, working outcome. This is a great app - and perfect for that class and for my personal use... just wish I could get it to work... I can look around in the Library and user library on my Mac for files - but if anyone has any input on where they're stored, it may ensure I don't miss anything... BTW - LOVE your Pratchett quotes! |

The default library is "Calibre Library" -- either in your Documents folder, or in your home folder, not sure which. (On linux it is in $HOME, on Windows I believe it is in "My Documents".) Hope you figure out what is going wrong. ![]() Quote:

Just search for "Calibre Lib". You might have chosen to place it anywhere, not just in the default spots. Mine is elsewhere. For that matter, my calibre.app in not in /Applications nor ~/Applications and that hasn't stopped it from running. I'm on OSX 10.10.5 so perhaps I can't directly compare but my calibre.app has been in a non-standard location for quite a few OSX versions.
Has downloading a new copy of the app itself been suggested yet? Just in case? |

@badgoodDeb - the suggestion to redownload/reinstall wasn't needed - was already done, to no avail. AND, I don't think I moved the library - but it's not unlike me to do so.
I'm actually preparing to upgrade to 10.10 this weekend (can't even consider El Capitan - SO much of my great hardware won't work with it, and I'm not made of money), but so many apps require it now (like MS 365). I do have the installer for it, just never did it. Now, I'm ready - so maybe THAT'LL fix the problem (not holding my breath though - if it's not working in 10.9, I doubt it's the OS). Actually, I'll have to update so many background apps, that perhaps I'll discover if one of those is interfering (again... since nobody suggested it, and this seems to be a standalone app, I doubt it'll help), but it's worth a shot. @theducks - so THAT'S the name of the library database? I'll back THAT up too - Thanks!!! |
