K5 FW 5.x ScreenSavers Hack - Page 150

I'll post this fix here in case it helps anyone. This might be a duplicate, but I couldn't find anything mentioning this specifically.

I had the Screensaver hack working perfectly on my jailbroken PW3 for many months when it suddenly stopped showing the cover page and was stuck showing the last page displayed. Nothing I did seemed to work - switching behaviour, clearing cache, restarting, etc. I downloaded the latest version and reinstalled the linkss package and it still wouldn't work. I then flagged it and uninstalled it and noticed a troubling error message on the uninstall, so I reinstalled the latest python package as well as linkss. Lo and behold it decided to work again.

Everything was fine for another month or two then last night it stopped working again - exactly the same as before, with the screensaver stuck in last screen mode no matter what I tried. This time I simply reinstalled python. And boom - working again. I suspect the latest issue may have been a result of the Kindle not ejecting properly before I unplugged it from USB, but somehow I managed to damage the python installation which crippled the screensaver package. All that needed to be done was to reinstall python (I reinstalled the latest version of both packages just to be sure.)

The first time this happened I was tearing my hair out trying to fix it, so I hope this might help prevent others suffering similar anguish.

Did you noticed that your firmware version had changed each time?
It is normal for our add-ins to require re-installation after each firmware update.

At least it does for the Kindles, I don't know about your PRS-505

No, my Kindle's in Airplane mode (and doesn't even have the right password for my wifi). I want to keep it on 5.6.5 just in case. The most recent event was clearly related to something going wrong when unplugging it from the PC (the machine stayed stuck on the USB Drive Mode screen, though I was sure I'd ejected it), but I'm not sure what caused the previous problem.

Well bother to update it now.
It is an important part of the context within which you pose a question.

Such as not including the context that you have now supplied.

I think the screensaver add-in can use gawk if you install it.
But I could well be wrong, check the directions.

You failed to give sufficient context to provide any answer.

What screensaver? From where? Which press of power button (on or off)? What ss mode are you using? How many ss in your pool?

And you'd be surprised at how weirdly mangled PNG files metadata can get, so, nope, definitely ugly to validate.

I wonder if it could include stripper and such so it fixes any mess? Or is png that weird?

Copy convert to identify (links are not supported on /mnt/us/..). Or create a link /bin/identify to convert.
Then you should hopefully be able to validate the files.
Validating the supported formats may be tricky so an additional conversion with convert may be more easy to implement.

I had the same behavior with PW2 FW 5.6.5 multiple times lately. In my case it seems to be caused by pressing "Clear cover cache" KUAL button. What helps is to disable SS > reboot > enable SS > reboot and then open some OTHER book than the one that was used last. No more last screen mode, no reinstall needed.

Let me say first I found the instructions on how to install the screensaver hack for my Kindle confusing and needed to have a friend assist me in installing it.

As it was, because things are long-distance between us, it took us several months to do.

After we had finished, the hack worked for about 2 days and then it fell apart.

Once the hack was first installed, I had loaded about 15 screensavers into my Kindle and it showed those one-by-one overtime without any problem.

However, after it reach the last one, it did not start repeating but instead whatever was on my screen when I turned off my Kindle (or it shut off itself) is what appeared as "the screensaver". For example, if I was reading page 235 of "War and Peace", when I turned off my Kindle, the "screensaver" would be page 235 of "War and Peace".

This has happening over and over now and has continued for almost 2 weeks now. Even when I install 20 totally different screensavers, my Kindle might show 1-3 of them and then it reverts back to showing whatever is on my Kindle screen (usually the last page I was reading) when it is turned off.

Is the problem I am describing the problem clear to what it is?

So -- can anyone help me SOLVE this so it will show the screensavers I install in my Kindle and once it was gone though them, repeated them?

Because right now, I really do NOT have any screensaver at all -- and I have a few 100 I really would like to be able to use.

If this cannot be fixed, I might need help in undoing the hack so at least the crappy Amazon screensavers show again.

That is a very original story.

Compare the configuration file on your Kindle with the original one, tell us what changes have been made to the original.

Check your firmware version - Is it now the same as when you started? (and mention what it is).
